aggression

I recently added a three inch juvi emperor angel to the reef(thanks Jim). I know it's risky, he'll eat my corals, etc . . . but I have mostly softies and I'm not real worried about it. I don't have any SHOW specimins or anything expensive. Just cheap leathers and some small ricordias.

My problem is my vlamingi tang. He's never show any aggression toward anything until now. He is keeping my new angel in the corner. I've not seen any open aggression, no scapels brought to bear, no swift attacking movements. I have seen some flaired dorsal fins, but mostly he just sits there in front of the angel. He will occasionally go back to the other side (where he always used to hang out anyway), but if the angel moves, he re-appears and just sits there.

I don't want to move rock because I really like my aqua scape, but I will if there are no other ideas.

Are there any other ideas? I will not go to bed tonight without having dealt with this.

If things don't get physically violent I wouldn't worry about it. you may want to put a veggie clip with some food on it over by where the angel is camping out....... it may just take time.

I actually tried the veggie clip. It just made the tang more territorial. Not good when someone tries to approach Hoss's food. Hoss no like that.

The angel has been eating whatever floats by. He just is staying in his little one by one area.

When my vlamingi was smaller he was like that with EVERY fish I added. Very territorial. Usually it took 4-5 days for him to get use to the new fish. I added a second vlamingi to my tank and that solved all my problems, the aggression completely went away. I think I have a M/F pair of vlamingii's though. They are both about a foot long now.

Can you reaquascape temporarily and then move things back after a few days? That may help. Or, if you can take Hoss out and let him have a timeout in QT tank while the angel gets used to the tank. I have an emperor angel as well. I've had her about 3 years now and added corals after I got her. SHe has only ever nipped at a brain coral. I have had acros, leathers, sinularia, zoanthids, hammers and clams. She has been a great citizen thus far. She is truly a pet.
