AI Hydra Settings Thread

Ok so I've noticed something pretty big since I've been using these hydras. Since lowering the uv about a year ago, most of my red corals have turned orange. My parameters are spot on and have only had this issue with LEDs.

After tons n tons of online reading it seems to be an LED lighting issue. I've power up my uv from 15 to 30 and am going to keep observations and see. If the corals redden up, I'm gonna go a bit higher with em. I originally turned the uv down due to SPS browning as a result of the higher uv. Kind of a sun block effect. We shall see how the Reds go w the new settings

Anyone else noticing this?!

Yes i had the same issue - I actually dropped the violet setting to 40% increased my UV to 60 for 3hrs and in the process of increasing my white to 70%
I have also shut off my red and have my green on @ 15 for 3 hrs

Interesting. How's it been working for ya?!

not to get off topic but are you dosing anything for colors?

It's not off topic lol. Every other time I refill the ato I add whatever's needed. Which isn't usually much. Maybe some mag and alk but the tank usually is within range without having to dose a lot.

I've also read about potassium being the culprit but I'm almost certain it's the LEDs and not a nutrient issue. It's only w red colored corals turning orange and sometimes adding green in there as well

Its been better for my lps and my montis so far im only on day 4 in white acclimating to 70% right now I around 43% I'm keeping an eye on things and will update.

As for dosing I use reef fuel aquivitro and reefsnow.

Nice. I use reef snow too. I also use reef keef which is a special blend someone made for me. I'll switch off w trace elements dvd reef plus too. Good stuff

I have an opportunity to pick up a couple of Hydra 52s with Director (used, for a few months) for a pretty decent price.

Currently I'm running a standard 90 gallon, mostly LPS and softies/zoas. Don't have SPS atm but may add in the future.

Presently I'm using a 4' Coralife Aquapro MH 150W with 14k Phoenix bulbs, but I'm not too happy with the colours of the corals in general.

Will the two Hydra 52 beat the MH in terms of output?

I like the customizability of the LEDs, no need to change bulbs regularly, and it's more future-proof when/if I plan to upgrade to a bigger tank, then I can just add additional Hydras. And the LEDs just look plain nicer than a big wide fixture like the Aquapro.

Anybody have experiences switching from MH to Hydras?

You'll have plenty of power and light w the 52s. And you'll have less heat and lower power bills. I would definitely use the coral acclimation mode to properly acclimate them to LEDs.

You'll love them. Congrats on joining the hydra club!

Thank you for the recommendation!

Realistically, how much money will I be saving per year for power bill?

With regards to the Director, do I need an ethernet cable into my router/computer? The tank is nowhere near my router, but I'd like to control it wirelessly.

But of course. That's what we're here for.

As far as power bills, it's not all that much per se but it help over time. The heat is the main one for me. I don't use a chiller here in SoCal. I would if I had MH

The director needs to be set up through your wireless router. No cable necessary. It's not that hard, but it can be a bit confusing. Check Ai's website on how to do it. My router isn't close to my director but it picks up from over 50' away.

That makes sense. Here in Vancouver we only get 2-3 hot months per year, but I'm wary that we may need a chiller to keep it down in those months, and it's a pretty big investment in itself.

Another nice thing is I don't have to replace the MH/PC bulbs. They're kinda expensive up here.

Good to know that the Director setup can be wireless. I consider myself pretty tech savvy so it shouldn't be a problem.

For my setup (90g, mostly LPS/softies), what kind of initial settings should I be looking at? Mounting height?

Nice! I love Vancouver. But whistler is my fave place! Haha

As far as settings go, I'd check through this nice and long thread to see what everyone's using. It varies per tank height and size and inhabitants.

My settings change often and I try new things all the time. My tank is 60g 48 x 15 x 17. The lights are about 12" above the water line. I have mostly softies as well. It's a trial and error type thing w LEDs

Do some reading and see what you think may be best for the tank.

Thanks! Yes, Vancouver/Whistler are beautiful cities. Whistler is probably packed with skiers now.

I'll read through this thread once I have the lights. From very preliminary knowledge, I am thinking with two Hydra 52s and the moderate size of my tank and its inhabitants (90g, LPS/softies/fishies), I'll start slow with a rather low setting and gently ramp up.

Great idea! Good luck and let us know how it goes
