AI Hydra Settings Thread

Sonic, do you think that the power supply may be going bad? Do you think a UPS would help?

Sorry just got all the notifications... I would try a different USB cable if you can. And there is absolutely no issue being connected to a ups, if anything you should be on a surge protector at least.

Tank is an 18" cube. Hydra26 is mounted 8" above the water line. Total from light to top of coral is about 22" and it is at the front right side of the tank so not direct center. I also have an alveopora direct center at the bottom but that seems to be doing good so far.

Being that I acclimated at 50%, should I increase the acclimation percentage maybe to 60% and extend the time to 8 weeks instead?

By the way, My crocea, frogspawn, Monti Cap, Zoa's and Paly's are LOVING the light.

The only thing I can think of is the Acan is getting to much light.
FYI when I ran my acclamation it did not take, I wish I had done it manually.

Fork up the big bucks and you can. LOL
I wish I had a pair of 52's, (now I am dreaming) LOL

They are...

I am humbled and thanks for asking!, playing it safe is definitely the way to go especially coming from non led. Do you plan on keeping the lights at 16" or is that part of the safety plan? If not I would lower them to where you will keep them since your settings along with acclimation mode are very conservative. Otherwise you can start reducing the acclimation weekly until it's off, watch corals and adjust accordingly. I usually take pictures monthly just so I can have a record of changes/growth. Also any corals NOT directly under the leds will be getting reduced lighting. I often use the walls or high up corners of the tank to acclimate new frags.

Thanks Hydra Man!
Being that my settings are conservative, what are the signs in your opinion to lower intensities than needed from Favias, chalices? Browning out?
I kind of like the 16" above the tank, so I get less of the individual led colors and get better, even spread. I hear 12" is the way to go, so maybe 4" isn't such a big deal? I ask because I really am playing safe and since I know these corals like less lighting than most of us put on them, I was hoping it would be ok?
So you say after the acclimation phase these intensities are way too low for health?

OK. Well, I know the acclimation is working because I made sure to see what it looked like by turning it off and on continuously. BIG DIFFERENCE and easy to see.

I just went ahead and placed the acan in the back left corner under a ledge so it's now in the shadows. It is already looking a little better. In a week or so I'll pull it back out to the light in the very far corner and see how it does. Hopefully it will do better. Eventually it will go back

agreed mine spike to 100% for about 2 hrs mid day then drop down to 30% i have great color on my sps

Have you observed the color without the mid day spike? I ask because others have recently posted that reducing UV has improved color.

Maybe the best is low with the mid day spike?

I have been following this thread for some time & trying some settings suggested, however, I cannot get a setting I am happy with.

Tank is 24x24x24 (2ft cube) with 1x Hydra mounted within my hood (fan/cooling is outside the hood), with the unit approx. 5" above the water.
Hydra fitted for 2months.

Mainly LPS with a couple of SPS.

W = 30
Violet = 10
Red/Green = 5
Blues = 65
UV = 25

Starting wish I kept the SOL unit.

Any suggestions?

What dont you like? is it too blue, too white? dim?

unfortunately i don't have any acans (yet) so i am not too sure on what they like with these lights, but I would definitely turn them up a bit if you are going to keep the lights high up.

@ 5" above the water you can probably turn your whites down to 20 or 25% and UV down to 15 or 20 % and get a nicer blue going. Personally i think the whites overpower the blues on the AI hydra and I wish there was a way i could order a puck with an extra blue led

i myself am still having issues with my acans and some LPS receding and bleaching.. but my acros and montis are doing great and growing :headwally:

65g 36x24x24 and I have the lights 8" above the water line and corals 6" or less below the water with lights at 100% across the all colors and everything is great.

Nice! How long have you been running them that high? Did you start them that high?

its seems like you have mostly SPS. if you don't have much for LPS then i can see that. it seems you can run the hydras high if your mainly running SPS and softies or zoes are ok with them too. but LPS like my acans are so damn finicky with these. i wonder if people who have the hydra 52's have the same issues with LPS corals bc if not i am thinking about upgrading mine to 52"s
