AI Hydra

Wow I run totaly opposite settings then you^

I find barely running cool white works best (could explain your bta problem)

with a lot of royal/uv/violets/green turned on higher

say a 1:3 white: blue ratio

My RBTA

My RBTA

I may have just learned that my Rose BTA that I was confused about my be a Rainbow BTA, LFS sold it to me as RoseBTA, After 2 weeks under the AI Hydra is was weird, now its noticeably a Rainbow BTA, It had some green at the store but I didn't really think much about it.

As for my light settings I also use CaribSea Indo Pacific sub, I like the black adn white, vs the pink, white and beige I see everywhere, and I mean everywhere...Maybe I am taking it too serious but I like to keep each tank, region specific.
If I turn down the white, I feel its too blue, I dont have alot of coral that I need to highlight.

I made a Post/Thread abot my tank so people can share about those kinda things,

LED Settings

LED Settings

As much as any reefer like to read, its all biased towards some agenda or another. The reason I mentioned my substrate color, is. It has alot of effect on the aesthetic of the reef. Coral specific wavelenghts aside, 99% of people tune LED's to what they like to look at, not what's good for the reef. The AI hydra gives use the option of having the best of both worlds IMO, you can increase wavelengths to suit corals, then adjust with green/red to suit our viewing pleasure. Try looking at coral through Cobalt lenses, its all about the filters or wavelenghts. Water is a filter as the nutrients within it. This site is friendly and has informative people, Good to know.

Glad someone finally has some input on these. I'm looking to upgrade my lights from a not-so "Reef Capable" light from Marineland. I was curious if you've had any issues with SPS or any other more challenging corals. My lfs talked me out of a Razor and tried to talk me into a Radion but the price tag is a little alarming. Running a 29 gal. right now with plans to jump somewhere north of 100 gal. within the next year and want something to move to the next tank. I don't want a light that will limit the corals I can grow.

Thanks ~

Just curious but why did your LFS talk you out of a Razor?

I want one really really bad.

Maybe they just don't carry them so they want to sell you something they have.

Did they give you good reason not to get the Razor?

They look oh so sweet.

Light choices

Light choices

I had the choice of a Radion G2 or Pro, AI Products, Vertex Aquastik or something, Kessil's which I use for my FW setup, 2 150 Amazon Sun's, Also there is Marineland and Aquaray. I would have gotten the Radion Pro except for my 25g cube it would be overkill, I have plans to upgrade to a 90g or 120g and 2-3 AI Hydra are cheaper then 2 Ecotech Radion Pro and will do the same thing. We can get 4 AI Hydra for 2 Radion Pro and still buy something else. Plus I dont trust LED's yet so cheaper replacement costs is really my thing right now. After all my looking around, I decided all I really wanted was decent on/off control and lunar cycle with excellent customer support, being tied to proprietatry devices is utter BS from all LED manufacturers, lame onbaord controls, when I saw AI director It really help make my choice more mobile device interoperability. We all either have Andriod or iOS devices, and rare Windows. The market is changing so fast. Also I didnt like that parts for Radion are so damn expensive, a P/S is close to 400 Dollars, AI Hydra is 50. Sorry I should have told you exactly what he said, "Do I need the Mercedes Factor". When I see someone or myself keep a light fixture until it dies then maybe we can make better choices. For now I like all the rest I am watching to see how things go.

I also have changed my settings to a more uniform output all hovering around 80% +/- 5% The Red mangrove likes the light too. It reaches for it. After I changed my settings my clown fish fed a peppermnint shrimp to it's friend.

I'm struggling with my hydras and my acroporas... Overall I like the adjustability, but I'm afraid to turn them up too high.... Plus when I turn the greens and red up past 30% my water get cloudy.... Thinking algea blooms?
Here are some full tank shots

I keep the red and greens low. I dont like the color they give off. Corals are growing very nicely in my 62g with my 2 hydras. I'm even running at 60 |% acclimation mode

what size tanks do you guys run your hydras on. after seeing milsaltnewbie07 tank i have been thinking about trying some on my 75 gallon mixed reef tank but did not know if they would be a good light for me on that tank.

The tank is only 5 months old so right now just running one in the center and a Finnex FugeRay 20 inch on the ends, once my other hydras arrive, the FugeRays will light the fuge.
