Cheaper? I believe that they are a great type of lighting but with the price tag I might be better off using halide or t5. I am looking at purchasing a 96x36x24 360 gallon aquarium that my friend is trying to sell. If I went all LED 2x every 12" that would be 16 AI led sols. That is a ton of money and would be even worse when I had to replace them down the road. I know I am going to be spending a lot of money to convert this into a reef tank but I have to compare my equiptment costs with efficiency. What will save me the most total money when you factor in cost and effiency.
Another thing to consider is just how much you will save if you wait. What are your exact needs now ? It sounds like you don't even have the tank yet or even setup? Do you have a tank now ? Do you have live stock to support once you set up that 300 gallon tank ? If your answers where no to the last couple then wait. Conetrate on getting you r tank going and cycled. A couple months or so and go slow. You can save up the money for your lighting and search those classifieds. You can pick up some great halide set ups on the cheap right now and save up for a led system when you need it. I like LEDs alot. I am going to wait for the next gen or better before I take the dive. Gl ! Hth.
