Aiptasia Eating Filefish

I have been trying to get my aiptasia under control for months now. Trying to see if anyone knows where I can get an aiptasia eating filefish or has one they are looking to sell?

Filefish is hit or miss. You have to starve your tank in order for them to eat the aiptasia. They will only eat the small ones too. Aquatic Collection in Hayward had some Filefish last weekend.

I've found a Majano Wand works best. It literally shocks and melts the aiptasia away.

I will check out AC. I have been using a Majano wand but there are several that retreat into the rocks, which I have been unable to get. Thank you for the help.

Man when I got one that actually worked it was a godsend. BUT - it took 3 or 4 attempts.

My tank was all sps and had a lot of flow. First one couldn't handle the flow and was plastered to one mp40 within a couple hours.

The second one didn't touch anything but loved ripping polyps out of my green slimer

The 3rd one DEMOLISHED aiptasia and also demolished my green slimer

4th one was a keeper but occasionally nipped at acro polyps. It was a worthwhile trade off.

When I ripped down my tank he was the first fish to get chosen. The nice thing about them is they're very easy to catch at night. So if one doesn't work take it back and try another. Good luck!

I got an ORA filefish hoping it would do the trick but the only thing I saw it do was nip at corals. A got a copperband and all aiptasia gone in a few days.

I am hoping a filefish does the trick, I don't want a copperband to eat all my corals. Going to see if I can get one this week. Thanks guys!

Klein's butter fly will take them down.
I tried two on two different occasions
And they did the job. I also got a couple of peppermint shrimps to get the ones in between the rock work haven't seen any since. The only downfall is I've heard they also like zoas. Never seen them go after my zoas. But a fish trap does the job if you want to catch them since they are voracious eaters.

I've had 2 filefish, first one died and did not eat anything. Current one I've had for a few months and eats every type of food I throw in there, pellets, flakes, frozen but I've never seen him actually eat my aiptasia yet they all disappeared except for a huge one that is in the back of the tank. Go figure, in any case it's a keeper for sure.

I have some peppermint shrimp in there, and I have seen one go after and eat aiptasia but I made the mistake of not nipping this in the butt early and not it's everywhere. I am not sure now whether I should get berghia or filefish, either way I need to decide by this weekend.

The aiptasia has been stinging on of my coral and I'm pretty sure killed one of my fish, I want them gone! They have started a war and I am going to win!

Thx for all the good ideas and feedback.

I’ll add my 2 cents, go with berghias. In full disclosure, I’m breeding and selling them. I’m out at the moment and this isn’t meant to be self promotion.

I’m growing aptasia all by itself in a tank and I can see how this nasty pest grows and consumes a reef tank. When you see a large aptasia in your tank what you actually have is a full range of them - babies, spores, the foot, and whatever you can see. The aptaisa in my tank reproduces in a few ways - dropping its foot like a mushroom, releasing spores which start as small balls and then lay a foot down and parts that fall off turning into aptaisa. This is probably how wands spread them around tanks.

In order to take down the full cycle of aptaisa, you need a solution that will attack the entire aptaisa cycle. That’s exactly what berghias do. If you have an egg sack, babies and mature adults, you will see results. The babies won’t eat medium or larger aptaisa until they get to a certain size but they will eat baby aptaisa. The juveniles and adults absolutely destroy them.

Hope that helps.

Keep in mind peppermint shrimp eat bergia nudibranchs, so if you want to go with the nudibranchs you need to remove your peppermint shrimp first.
