Aiptasia? Hi and thanks!

:wavehand: I'm new (again, as I briefly had a tank 15 years or so ago) to the hobby and I'm setting up a nano reef (Fluval EVO 13.5) with my 11 year old son. I'm hoping he'll love fish as much as I do.

So far I've got my LR/LS, 3 florida turbo snails, 4 blue legged hermits, one ocellaris and one black neon dottyback. It's still relatively new but pic is attached.

I think I got two aiptasia on the live rock from my LFS but hoping to get positive ID before I kill something nice.

I'm sure posts like this get put on here all the time, so many thanks in advance.

And for those wondering, I did fully cycle the tank before adding the CUC and fish. :)

If you see anything amiss please let me know as any and all advice is appreciated.

I always kill :hammer:

lol its a matter of principle.

Personally I never really worry about aiptasia.. IMO they only become a problem when your nutrient levels are out of control...

When I first started in this hobby though I would spend countless hours with joes juice/kalk paste,etc... Then I got better at nutrient control and aiptasia never were an issue..

But I've had them 4-6" long or more on many occasion..

This is from a previous tank..

Give that aiptasia a unique name and sell them for big bucks lol!

I can attest to that.... previous tanks of mine have also had them and some of them were pretty large also.

I like to feed my fish a lot (3x per day) so for this tank, I am trying to be extra careful not getting any in the system to begin with.

It's definitely aiptasia. Kill it!!!! (Or don't) but seriously. If you don't, more than likely they will turn into 4 then 16 then 256.. . And so on. Easier to treat now instead of when they are really a problem.

Really? I have an Aiptasia Eating Filefish; a good little guy, he is. He made short work of mine! :D
Oh man you got lucky or I'm just really unlucky. I bought an ORA aiptasia filefish and it never touched aiptasia. It went straight for my Walt Disney and home wrecker acros.

Bummer to hear that. :sad2:
Hope you still have him anyway. I think they're so cute!
How did you end up getting rid of the Aiptasia in your tank, anyway?

Thanks all for the confirmation. I'm working from home today so I took the rock out and blasted them with my crème brûlée torch. Anything living after that might deserve to stay in the tank.

My cleaner shrimp almost immediately went picking at one of the spots, guess I left some tasty morsels.
