Aiptasia Warning (possibly from meeting)

i don't think anyone was getting mad at you about it jon. in fact from what i read they were very appreciative. just a warning for THEM to pick through it extra carefully. i know i wouldn't expect you to do that if you're giving it away!

I hope it's clear to you that it was not my intent to blame you, but to let you and others who share the same chaeto know. Until someone else in this thread confirmed it happened to them too, I was unsure of the source.

To be honest it is possible for aiptasia to hitchhike onto the chaeto ball, although this was not my intent.

That would be pretty evil if it was intentional, but I never once suspected it was, which is the second reason I decided to post. You seem like a responsible hobbyist who'd rather know than not.

In the future you may want to swish chaeto in fresh salt water or fresh for that matter to dislodge anything that is in there... bristleworms, etc.

Now that you mention it, I found my first bristleworm at the same time.

Remember this stuff is treating as a waste product for me and I cannot guarantee it is lab grade material.

I should have watched it for some time in my QT, but instead dropped it into my fuge.

I guess I should pick through it extra carefully before I bag it up, drive across the state and deliver it for free.

Again, not what I was suggesting. If you remember correctly, I offered you money for your time, effort, and chaeto. Though the chaeto is in the trash, I am still thankful for your time and effort. I'm geniunely happy to have had the experience.

I guess I would have expected a little more couthe with regards to this, i.e. a PM- "hey any chance I could have gotten aiptasia in the chaeto?"- that's all!

I'm still very grateful for the chaeto and I apologize if it didn't sound that way. I'm very greatful for the thread, cause before hand I didn't know what they looked like. They were extremely easy to get rid of from my fuge, it was no big deal. But at least now I know that I have it in my main tank and have to take care of it. Once again Jon, thank you very much for your chaeto.

Jon,

Please don't think for a minute that I am unappreciative of what you did for me. I would not expect that you would put any more effort into this than you did, ie: pluck it out of fuge and put it into a bag. If there are any hitchhikers, then it is up to the recipient to inspect the item and determine whether or not they want to put it into their system, just as they would a purchase from a LFS.

As it is in my fuge, I do not care if there is an aiptasia or two to deal with. I have been unable to find a place to buy chaeto in bulk, this was free, and I will put up with any hitchhikers.

OK, Back to how to get rid of them. I received some zoas from a tank that I purchased full in December. The tank did not have aiptasia that I could see. I did check for it. About a week after taking all the live stuff set up I noticed that my zoas had at least 3 small aiptasia on it. I took it out the instant I saw it and threw it in a quarantine tank. I have had it in there since Dec. It spread or turned into 5 in about 1 months time. So I picked up some peppermint shrimp at the last meeting and threw them in. One of the aiptasia was pretty large about the size or the shrimp themselves. I threw them in when I arrived back from the meeting. The next morning all the aiptasia was gone!!

Now, it worked for me so for about $9.00 I got 2 of them with no chemicals or kalk mixing. My question is are they really gone or do the shrimp just keep it at undetectable levels?

I've only had peppermints keep them at bay when starved....reducing the numbers but never fully eradicating them. Others report better mileage out of them. Maybe I've just tried bunk shrimp???

Mine seems fine too. I can't see anything that looks like aptasia in it. Thanks Jon. Much appreciated.:thumbsup:

I asked this before and was told it is in the filter because some guy kept trying to sell his car of that name in the forums, and kept registering under different emails so banning him wasn't working. So they banned the word instead.
