Alaska scenic shot with a point and shoot

I dont know why, but I really like this picture. I cant wait until I get my digital SLR, as I'd really like to be able to get some good scenery shots that my point and shoot just cant quite capture.

This shot is probably more "cool" if you know the area. That is Turnagain Arm, which typically never has still water. The tides vary so much there that we have what are called boar tides, which means the water is coming in so fast that it actually starts stacking up, and you get a continuous wave 1-5' high that flows all the way down it. These waves can last for over an hour and cover 25 miles... pretty crazy.

Anyway, I really liked the shot

The first words that came out of my mouth were "oh wow, that's pretty cool". Those kind of waves are found down in the Amazon where one of the large rivers meets the ocean as well. Pretty neat to watch people surf them on TV when they come in.

Yep, I've seen people surfing them here in Alaska as well. They of course are wearing full body wet suits to combat the cold

Very nice photo. I have visited Alaska once (about 5 yrs ago) and I have to say that I think it is the most beautiful place in the world. Again, great shot.

Nice Recty - is that recent? I haven't been down that way in a while. Are you in Los Anchorage?

I remember one time I was coming thru a few years ago and it was like glass. Some images I got that day and posted elsewhere lead to an agent contacting me and ulitimately several of my images were published in a book on travel photography (ironically enough they didn't even use the one that originally got their attention!).

The "arm" can be awesome. Beluga whales cruise the banks, Bald Eagles overhead, Dall sheep and Moose wander the cliffs (oh, and bears too!).

Thanks for posting that Recty (love the mood - low clouds or fog - nice). Maybe it's time for me to take a drive that way

Yep, I'm in Anchorage. That's the second or third time you've asked me that in the last couple months

That was a nice picture you had of the Arm, very still water, you hardly ever ever ever see that there, there is always some wind or the tide is moving the water.

I do like the mood of my shot, the low cloud layer really makes it seem somber.

Yeah, I post on Alaska Frag Swap, I'm grantypoo on there, the guy with all the triggers And no, you never did ask me about that one.

I was at the Alaska Coral Maniacs meeting last month too. I was the one who said "Hey I'm Grant and I dont really have corals, but I've got a nice FOWLR". Not too memorable

I didnt really meet anyone there except Jerome, he had a lot of questions about triggers so I talked to him for a while about that while the rest of the people were having discussions about what direction the club was going. That doesnt really interest me so I backed off and talked about fish, which does interest me
