Alex's purple gigantea

Alex's purple gigantea

This is the XL dark green tentacles with purple base Magnifica I saw together with the gigs this morning. Sorry about the crappy photo, it was planted with the foot on the side of the frag tank and there were tons of reflections.

Alex

I just realized it's THE one I bought....lol no joke. It definitely looked better when I picked it up a week ago. They must have just gotten it when you took pictures of it. Small world.

Sadly, my gig went from this......

to this in the past 2 days....

Now the problem is how to get it off the rock, I tried a couple of times using the plastic spoon I normally use to pry off anemones and on my second attempt I used a butter knife, but the foot is too large and is stuck to the rock way too strongly, to complicate things the foot is attached to the underside of a cave like structure. If I force, I'm almost positive I'll damage the foot.
I know it needs to be treated, I've had the HT ready since yesterday, but I don't see how I'm going to remove it from the rock.

You may want to try a few ice cubes in a plastic bags and rub them on the foot to get it to release or at least lift a corner up enough for you to get the spoon in there.

can you put him in the HT with the rock?

I just can't remove the rock, it's a major structure of the aqua scape with corals attached and a mag at the very top.

Ironically, despite I had prepared what I thought was the perfect spot when I introduced it to the DT, a little over 2 weeks ago it decided to move during the night to the present location and didn't move since. As it was doing so well I didn't worry too much about the spot it chose, but in the past 2 days it suddenly began the dreaded deflation-inflation cycle.

I tried that in the past with mixed success. I'll give it a shot in the morning, the foot is at least 7-8" across, so it won't be easy.

there was a time when i treated my WHOLE system with Cipro due to total frustation of moving the nem back and forth. i just decided to treat the whole tank with corals and nems in it and it doesnt appear to harm any living things in the tank. i have frogspawn and leather and fishes but no SPS coral. i went through 100 pills in about a week. the nem that i intended to treat is now thriving.

Sorry about your bad luck, if ice cubes don't work I have no idea what you should do... hopefully you get it out safe and it responds to treatment.

Interesting, what I would be worried about is the biological filtration being thrown off due to killing bacteria in the LR. Did you check your parameters before, during and after treatment? I would love to know if there were any swings.

the only water test i do is the salinity of the water, lol. i dont test any parameters in my tank for a VERY VERY VERY long time so i dont have test kits. i have to say that system has no live sand, just live rock, cheato, corals and nems and fishes. during and after the treatment i see no ill effect on living creatures in my tank.

I'm very tempted to try dosing Septra, but I'll wait and see one more day.
Right now it is about 40-50% inflated, just siphonoglyphs exposed.

My water parameters are in check. Like you, I am not one of those that relies on religious testing. Once you know your system, you can tell almost right away when something is off. I do calcium-Mg-alk tests about once a month, and they are mostly within the norm.

My Apex gives me readings for ph, temp, conductivity and ORP. And I spot test salinity and phosphate with milwaukee electronic testers.
Also have an ATS and I run gfo and carbon.
My only sps is a large Montipora Capricornis that I purposely leave unattached to LR, for easy removal, in case one of my nems decides to go for a stroll. The rest are softies.

I did a 30% manual WC yesterday (on top of the daily automatic litermeter WC system).

The foot is firmly attached, so much that the lip of the foot in contact with the rock feels hard when I try to lift it with my fingernail.

Dosing the entire tank keeps crossing my mind. I'd really hate to loose such a beautiful gig.

i said i used Cipro. I dont know anything about Septra. i think different med can/do kill different bacteria.

My tank went through Cipro treatment (250mg/10gal) and i did not see anything unusual.

Yeah, I know, I have that too. I mentioned Septra because it appears to have perhaps a milder side effects. Did you dissolve Cipro separately in a container with DT water and then added it?

What about daily water changes, what was the ratio?

Now it looks like this. Mouth shut and about 80% inflation.
But it is deceiving, it has been behaving like this for the past 3 days.

i put 10 pills in a large water-glass (glass that i drink water with) with tank water for 15 mins or longer, then i stir the water with a spoon until all desolved then poured into the tank directly on top of a powerhead after the light went out. i did not do any water change during treatment. i did some water change after the treatment, like 30 gal in a 100 gal system.

Thanks! Do you have a thread about your treatment?

I just tried to pry it off one more time. Managed to get 1/3 of the foot detached, but the rest was attached too strongly that I'm certain I would have lacerated the foot, so I gave up.
Used the ice trick, but had no effect.

This worked for me with haddoni. I was able to get it out with no damage to the animal whatsoever. I did it with my hand wearing gloves by pushing the foot (from behind) off the rock. You should be able to do it too now that you took 1/3 of the foot off already.

Just wondering. Have you been feeding it?

I fed it twice, a piece of scallop and a piece of shrimp, same what I fed my mag. However, last week it ate a dying peppermint shrimp that landed on the edge of its sticky tentacles. After a couple days it spat out the empty shell and antennae.

No i dont

I managed to pull it out today. Now it's in my 10g HT and dosed Septra.

It's in pretty bad shape, I hope it will recover.
