After my post 2 days ago things appeared to be going well, however things didn't quite work out so easily.
Let me quickly recap.
After I treated for 8 days I decided to stop as it had been 4 days that I haven't observed deflations and the gig appeared to be recovered.
Last Wednesday I decided to stop dosing Septra and just perform WC's twice a day.
This is how it looked around 9am yesterday.
Then, inexplicably, in the span of a few hours it went from fully inflated to deflated like a pancake with gaping mouth and looking really bad.
Having witnessed such a rapid decline after all the effort I put in during the past 2 weeks really made me feel as deflated as the poor gig.
I spoke to an experienced reefer friend of mine and he told me I had to keep the water as crystal clear as possible and do it asap, so as a last resort I pulled out the gig, emptied the HT, and cleaned everything, heather, wavemaker, aquaclear and washed thoroughly the tank with rodi and a bit of white vinegar.
Then I filled the tank with new water and placed the gig inside. You have no idea how bad it looked, I was convinced it was gone.
Here's the gig after I cleaned the tank and the rest. What you see on the right hand side are air bubbles from the airline.
At that point there wasn't much more that I could do. The water and tank were crystal clear, I left on actinics at the lowest setting for the night, and went to bed.
This morning when I got up and checked the tank I couldn't believe my eyes, not only the gig went from pancake flat with gaping mouth to fully inflated, but it also moved 1/2 way in the tank and climbed to the shorter side!
This afternoon I decided to put it in my cycled QT and it appears to be doing well so far.
As I wrote in Dave's thread, I am convinced that 2 things happened.
1- I overdosed Septra, I think 8 days total and 4 after it was always fully inflated are way too much medication. I should have stopped at 5.
2- I only cleaned the HT with some paper towels when I did WC's.
Despite I was turkey basting and doing multiple WC's per day, I wasn't doing a thorough cleanup. I really begin suspecting that during treatment and especially after apparent recovery it is critical to keep not just the water as crystal clear as possible, but also the tank as well as all the equipment that is in contact with the polluted water. I ordered spare nano koralia's and aquaclears so I can always have clean ones ready after each 24 hours.
It is a massive effort to do WC's and keep everything spotless, but I think it's worth it.
