Algae eating fish

Anybody know what the best algae eating fish available are? I am starting to get a little hair algae growing and need some help. My lav tang and potters angle don't seem to be of much help with this kind of algae. :sad2: thx.

not a lot of fish are guaranteed hair algae eaters. probably better off with some mexican turbo snails, or improved water quality/nutrient export.

I agree the Foxface is probably the best agea eater in general, mine however, never made a dent in the hair algea.
Manual removal and strict W/Q control did the job for me.

Water quality is key. I would go with a Stary Blenny, or Lawnmower Blenny.I prefer the Stary though because they seem to have better attitudes, and are algae machines.

i had all kinds of algae problems, tried all kinds of fish, crabs, sea hares...
one day i threw in a yellow tang and it wiped out all my algae within 2 weeks

moral of the story = yellow tangs own algae

I run 2 reactors. 1 with GFO and 1 with GFO and carbon. I do at least a 10% water change every 2 weeks and clean and change filter pads once a week and have 2 refugiums. I have 2 vortech MP40's and 2 tunze 6055's plus 2 ehiem 1262 return pumps for flow and this has all worked very well for over a year and a half and now all of a sudden hair algae.

I like Foxfaces but read they might eat LPS and wasn't sure if I want to take the chance.
Not sure how my lavender tang and yellow tang would get along. Lavender tang has been the only tang in the tank for well over a year now. Need to look into the blennies.

In my previous tank, I had a Foxface, and he never bothered any of the LPS. Having said that, there is always a chance. IMO, if they are fed well, they should stay from your corals. Also, I really like the coloration of the Magnificent Foxface. :)

I had a severe algae problem in my tank...hair, green, and a bit of bubble starting. I had a yellow tang, who was trying to keep up, but is too small, so I got 3 medium everald crabs, a large algae blenny, and some cleaner shrimp. Don't know if the cleaner shrimp do anything to the algae, but wherever they hang out, within a day or two, there is no algae. Besides that, in about two weeks, my algae problem was GONE. Completely gone. I cant keep snails alive in my tank, so crabs and fish were the answer for me. And if the emeralds ever get to agressive, I'll use a crab trap to get them out. Just my .02

I bought a lawnmower to help out with algae, but the little guy wont touch that stuff! and I was told that it was guarantee that it would clean my tank!

I agree with jt, water quality is the "best" way to keep algae under control.

I also agree with the water quality thing too but I don't see how I can keep it any cleaner. I just think sometimes when u have a closed system with water and living things u are going to eventually have some algae growth and I just need some of the critters in the tank to help control it.
Some do a better job than others and just looking for plenty of suggestions as to which ones those are.

thx
