A biofilm is just a group of bacteria that clump together. The nutrients stay inside them.

Thanks everyone. I did as suggested and removed it cleaning sand rocks etc, with larger than normal water change. The bio-film really didn't smell good at all, but it's out and no traces of it coming back. Still dosing Algaefix, still have elevated magnesium levels, and still have lots of algae. But its much much less than I started with. Hopefully in a few more weeks I will be algae free as I would hate to have to replace the rock and sand and start all over after all these years.

Should never be a need to replace rock or sand.
if your showing nitrites and amonia after 4 yrs of being set up then you have other issues besides the algae as these should not be present , i assume tests have been verified as correct? what ever is giving you this reading can also possibly be feuling your algae(dead snails, fish etc.)
After dosing algaefix my algae problem is now gone. I stopped dosing a week ago and the algae has not shown signs of returning! I have also started testing the all in one biopellets on my system removing the traditional pellets I had been using and switched to all in one for testing. So far the all in one is still breaking in and I have posted my results of testing in the all in one thread. Only concern/issue I have now is an outbreak of red cyanobacteria.
