Algae id please

Can anybody id this it feels like felt and has a very stong hold, it also smells really pungent almost like mushrooms

Looks like mermaid's fan Udotea species.

looks like it could be that, thanks bluecat do you know anything about it the smell has me curios is it binding something?

I dunno. Could be something like the mermaids fan but generally they don't do much movement with the current.

I'd look at a Padina or lobophora species for a possible ID as well

cant see a resemblance in any of them
