you could leave it in but some people consider it an eyesore.

If you are referring to the Power Magnets yes they can be left in the tank

Thanks, thats what I needed to know. Its a Tunze magnet so I thought this would be the best place to ask

Yes, they are waterproof, but, be careful with the string, it will wick out water. It won't wick water if you run your finger down it and basically wring it out, this prevents the capillary action pulling out water. I usually replace the line with floating fly fishing line, it keeps it out of the way and doesn't wick water.
