Algae Scrubber Basics

David, when you post anything via tapatalk, right after you post you have to go in and "edit" your post then save it (without changing anything) or else everyone who is viewing it on a PC sees only the IMG code and not the actual picture.
K. I think you mentioned that before and I forgot.

Actually it does the same thing when you quote a post too. Basically any BB code shows up as tags when you post via Tapatalk. So your last 2 posts show up with the QUOTE tags visible.

setup the scrubber for my 110g tank about 3 weeks ago. so far this has worked out great at reducing nitrate. before the scrubber i was at about 20-25 after 2 weeks it went to about 10 now down to 5-7.

i clean it weekly. red slime algea has taken off in sump which i attribute possibly to the 27k bulbs?
still getting small amount of algea on front/back glass and on sandbed.

Well I'm at a point now and I'm lost. I've cleaned everything the best I can and when I turn up the flow it always seem to spray everywhere where the slit and mesh are. I'm wondering if the slit is just a hair to tight and needs to be opened some. I am debating on modifying for the time being and redesigning a new scrubber. Any thoughts on the extra spray everywhere and the water running along the bottom of the pipe?

What you can do to prevent the water creep along the pipe is take some airline hose, cut about a 2" long section, and snake a zip-tie through it. Then tighten that down around the pipe with the tie clasp at the bottom.

As for the sideways spray from the pipe at high flow, it might be your slot not being wide enough, you can trim it out a bit but a little goes a long way.

You could try saran wrap, draped over the slot pipe and an amount, say 4", onto the screen on both sides.

what did you use to cut the pipe with? i used the 1/8" blade on my table saw and it seems to be just hte right size no spray.
maybe i missed how much flow you have blasting through the pipe, maybe too much i dont know.

I used a dremel tool. I'm gonna test my flow again to make sure what is the right amount but I can already tell it maybe the slot since the back gets a better flow than the front

Dremels are harder to get straight, so you probably have curves. Could turn down the flow and let it fill in, or, insert a second small piece of screen into the larger areas.

Have not read the whole thread and I am at work soooo ....is there any reason to run a skimmer , filter sock , GFO etc after the screen is matured ?

Depending on what you want to keep in the tank, and also depending on how well your scrubber is built and maintained, yes there can be a reason to keep one or all of those.

Hello, I am looking to build 2 algae scrubbers. First one for a 30 g Anenome and clownfish tank and later a 55 gal to be decided tank. Is there a link for a DIY algae scubber that is both effective and inexpensive? I want to use LED's and was going to use these (http://www.expressions-ltd.com/Algae_Scrubber_LED_Light_p/led-grow-light.htm) but they are 13" wide. From what I read 7" is more than enough with 5 reds and maybe a blue on each side. I would appreciate the help because the ones I found are older links and I know technology changes very quickly, as do advancements. Thank you in advance.

My signature, in the post right above yours, will direct you to the latest version of the Algae Scrubber Basics. For the most part, it is all still very relevant, with the lighting being the thing that really needs the biggest update. Search this thread for my posts over the last 6 months and you will find a few LED guideline recommendations (using the Search This Thread link at the top of the page, go advanced, enter my user name)

After 34 days got my first real harvest today woo-hoo!

I still seem to have a problem getting much of any flow on the first 1/4 of the screen. It seems to bypass it. I don't know if I I have too much flow/pressure or what the story is. I've ran a credit card up in the slot while it's running to make sure it's clear of obstruction and it is so not sure what else is going on....

Notice the first quarter of the screen is real blotchy growth and some yellow areas.
