Algae scrubber coral experiences

Hello folks,

I've seen a bunch of threads on the many ways to lego together your scrubber but what I find sparse are tales of true experience with coral growth. I posted a reply to this thread in the SPS forums and I wanted to link to that as well as host an independent thread here. What I'm looking for are your tales of success and failure with coral growth using an algae scrubber. By no means is it a requirement to have a scrubber as your sole means of filtration - I'm not convinced it can handle things 100% on its own, but it's working OK so far for my system. Many of the things I'm seeing may be due to the normal maturation of a medium sized reef tank. Some photos here. Details follow below...

Tank: 90G (~110G total volume), scrubber driven by Eheim 1262 return pump, no filter sock, live rock and additional critters in the sump.
Lights: 2x250W MH (1 10K, 1 Radium) @ 5.5 hours and 2x54W Actinic @ 8 hours; scrubber has 4x23W CFL (2 on each side)
Params: PH 8.24, Alk 9.8, Ca 420, Mg 1400, NO3 0, PO4 0.025; 2-part added twice daily (morning and night) and ATO includes Kalk.
Maintenance: Scrubber cleaned weekly, 15-20% w/c monthly
Fish: yellow tang, (2) percula, (3) purple firefish, mccosker's, mandarin

SPS: Great polyp extension on several different types. Good growth on monti's of all types as well as birdsnests. Slow on others but most are encrusting quite well. I've had RTN on 2 montis but I believe these are unrelated to tank conditions as growth continues after I excised the bad parts.

LPS: All seem to do very well except for chalice, though I've only had a single 1"x2" frag so far (it's receded slowly over the course of 2 months or so). Plates, duncan, hammer, frog, acans, etc. are all happy.

Softies: I've only had a toadstool leather that I've since donated to another reefer. It seemed to do OK but shed monthly.

Anemones: Single RBTA that has split into two that I now want to get rid of (it's stinging my duncan and I like the duncan better!!). Both parent and clone have mostly lost their bubbles. Otherwise they're stable.

Zoos: Mixed bag here. They're open nicely most of the time but they are quite stagnant. I'm going to try target feeding them a few times a week to see if that helps.

Shrooms: I have a few different Ricordea Florida and Yuma that seem happy for the most part. No real expansion but they do OK.

That's about it. I've had bouts of what I consider normal newbie/new tank pests including diatoms, flatworms, valonia (which is making a comeback - boo!) and dinos - dinos being the most problematic but I seem to have them beat down for now. Coralline has taken over most of the rockwork which is great.

So anyone else have scrubber stories to share? Look forward to seeing some good results out there!

my corals don't seem to grow any faster, but they do seem to mutiply at twice the rate as before the scrubber, and I have zero display algae,, ZERO I say! :)

Thx for the reply! Can you elaborate on your growth and setup perhaps? What's multiplying? Definitely concur on the algae front in a big way, although valonia seems to be creeping it's way around. I clean the glass about once per week though it's barely green.

Also, one angle I left out is feeding. I feed at least a cube per night plus some flake or pellets a few times per week. I don't rinse and I sometimes soak in selcon and such. In addition I clip in some nori for the tang 2-3 times per week and I target feed the LPS a mix of scallops and mysis a few times per week.

My scrubber has been going about a month and a half. I have noticed my algae regressing but not hair algae. I am hoping that occurs soon. (I hate hair algae) My birdsnest grows very fast and i think faster since my scrubbing began. The Monti grows about the same rate. My acopora grows very little before and currently. The shrooms stopped multiplying althought jsut today one of my ricordia was splitting. My zoas are growing slowly. I have a bubble coral slowly regressing(he was my favorite). He has seemed to stop dieing but has not yet grow to what he once was. RBTA split since the scrubbing. Torch and hammer expand more now than ever. I think I covered everything.
I feed a cube a day and I do not spot feed at all. How do you guys spot feed? Do you jsut use a syringe and spray the food over the colony? Do you cover the colony with something so the food does not exscape in the current. Do you stop skimming?
I do not rinse before feeding or add anything. I use mysis.

Interesting points on the torch/hammer happiness and the RBTA split. Do your nems still have bubbles? Mine disappeared on the parent after about a month but my tank params weren't as stable as they are now.

I spot feed the chunky stuff like scallop and shrimp with a grabber tool. Mysis goes in with a baster. Phyto is done via one of those Seasquirt syringes from Kent Marine.

My nems are not bubbled anymore they are just Rose Tip anenomes but i think this occured when i got my clowns not when they split. I always have blamed it on the clowns anyways

I ran an ats for 8 months and finally took it offline when I gave up on my bryopsis battle. I lost almost all my lps. I had a nice torch, candy cane and a duncan. My zoas were tinier than ever. My sps seemed pretty happy though.

I think my water was too clean. I only have 8 small fish and I don't feed a lot. My opinion is just that, but I think if you have setup that produces lots of no3 & po4, then it might work for you. I've gone back to chaeto to for now.

My experience was the scrubbers work almost too well. I was feeding 2-3 cubes of frozen food daily for 4 small fish in a 40 br. That wasn't counting coral feedings and occasional pellets. It only took afew days of neglecting the feeding schedule to see corals begin to turn pale. I did heavily oversize it, though. It used about 180 in sq and 90w of light.

I'm tagging along in this one because I plan on running a ats on my first tank I'm currently planing a sump set up for it now wasn't going to put anything in for a skimmer but I should have some extra room just incase it doesn't work out but my hopes are high for it to work well I guess we will wait and see

It's been pretty quiet so far. I'd definitely appreciate posts of unsuccessful applications as well. More results are helpful in gauging the effectiveness of this approach.

It took almost a year of running a powerful scrubber to see the results that I have today.

My paylays,GSP,zoas, and keyna tree split&grow like crazy! While my hammer, elephant ear ,and mushrooms just grow slowly.

I feed an insane amount of coral and fish food. About 18 scoops of reef chili per day and about 12 pinches of spectrum life max fish food twice a day.

I am NOT making this up!

I only do water changes when something goes wrong I/E power outage or something like that. It comes out to about one 10% water change per year.

I have only had one sps coral in this system a green apple sps,,that coral would not grow until I got the scrubber going and started feeding like crazy,,but then sadly I lost it in a storm :(

o yea...you asked about the system....It is a 45 gallon oceanic cube with 20gallon long homemade sump in basement. the ATS is the SOLE filtration,no foam,no skimmer,no sock,,no nuttin. Homemade 24 CREE led lighting. one large hydor for flow. I have 9 medium sized fish ,2 nems, and about 500 snails and about 200 corals. The system has been up and running for about 6 years now,2 years with ATS. I have had the 9 fish for about 18 months now.

Thx for the additional tank stats. How's your N/P? I think part of my problem with growth might be that I'm underfeeding but I also don't want to risk bumping up dissolved organics.

to be honest I have no idea what my N&P are....I have not had a need to test for about a year now. Back when I did test my readings wear all over the place. I don't think they make a good enough kit for N or P. I wish I could post pictures but for some reason it never works for me. I am not that good at computer stuff. If someone wants to try and tell me how I shall try again. I have a fugifilm camera with a SD card and a HP pc. I would even post a picture of me dumping in tons of food,,just to show that I am telling the truth.

You. An email me your pics in any format and I can post for you. Pm me for email-

Definitely don't doubt what your feeding. It makes sense that your p's, z's and softies are thriving which is what made me curious about levels. What's good for them may not be so good for LPS but I don't know for certain. The data is just helpful to put the puzzle together. Z's don't do too well in my tank (mostly stagnant tho they've got a bout of what I think is pox right now - no clue where that originates) but LPS really thrives.

One of the best benifits of an ATS is that it allows you to really feed your livestock without the subsequent nutrient overload. I feed a sheet of nori, 2 cubes of cyclops, 9 cubes of mysis and four dry food feedings a day. I also feed the corals freeze dried rotifers every third night. I could never come close to that amount of food before the ATS. I use it in combination with biopellets and a skimmer. The added nutrition is a bonus for the fish and the sps. It has been a real sucess story for my setup.

Thanks for chiming in, Paul! Your tank (and solarium) is amazing. The layout post-AI is dramatically better, IMO. Love that carpet!! Incoming bombardment with follow-up questions...

That is ton of food but you do have quite a large volume on your setup. Have you noticed any specific changes in your corals (branching vs. plates vs. encrusting; LPS such as plates, froggies, acans; zoa/paly's)? Has your P gone to zero or does it fluctuate?

Is your scrubber undersized since you're pairing with biopellets (though it looks about 20x20 which is just about right)? Do you supplement with any chemicals besides the basics (such as Sr, I, zeovit products, etc.)? Have you always lit the scrubber with those LEDs? They are certainly tempting with the subsidized pricing!
