$ & algae sweeping magnets

The tank I got came with the algae sweeping magnet. It has always been on the wall of the tank and has some coralline algae growing on it to make it blend in with the background. It is a quality magnet and I've seen similar ones for $40. I think that it might be scratching the acrylic surface.
I chose to buy a new one from the 'Big Box LFS' for $12. It was snazzy looking, but turned out to be a worthless POS that did not even hold on to the tank wall, never mind doing it's job. It sank to the bottom several times during the sweeping and I had to reach way in there to reattach it. . . .
So, do I get a new one for $40?
Or do I soak its working face in bleach in order to refresh its sweeping surface?
Or do I apply some material to "retread" it? -What is the material of choice?
I have a hunch that my cheapness is causing me to split hairs but $40 for a magnet that I already have prompts me to write to the group for advise.
Thanks,
Tom

Do research on what model yours is and they have replacement pads for most..

A way to clean it is to use a 50/50 white vinegar to water solution and soak it overnight in it.. Should do wonders to it.. W/acrylic you have to be sure not to have anything under the magnet or else it will scratch it.. I also never leave my magnet inside my small acrylic tank just because things grow on it that can scratch the surface after a while..

+1, even with a glass tank remove the cleaner or you will scratch the glass. I would use 100% vinegar if there is a lot of coraline on the magnet.

Some people use a magic eraser between the magnet and the glass to prevent scratches. Just make sure the one you choose doesn't have any cleaners in it.
