I recently have been doing some research on a diy algae turf scrubber for my 29g biocube and it looks very easy to do that I'm giving it a try. Hope it works so i can get rid of the bioballs in my tank.

The cut out is where i will put the scrubber screen that way i can leave the tray in place when i have to clean it.

OK So i just finished my algae turf scrubber now have to wait for the silicone to seal. Also need a light so i can set it up

just make sure there is enough room in the "holder opening" for the algae to pass (otherwise it'll get scraped off).
Some algae scrubbers I've seen usually use gravity fed or "pressured" water to create more turbulence. Not sure if it's necessary, just pointing it out.
I am thinking of doing a ATS for my "next custom sump" too.

Saw a cool one with LED panels on either side of the scrubber. It was a nice design for sump.

How effective are LEDs for an ATS? Since the wavelength is so narrow, not all types of algae will grow effectively, right?

You can get the 45k leds I have seen people using red LED with good results.

Yeah i was going to look into red leds i hear they work better for algae growth just need the money now. anyone want to buy an iPhone 4? lol

Do you think a par38 red/blue grow light rated at 300k is too much?
Four 1.5amp LEDs (2x red and 2x warm white) run on a simple moonlight driver will grow the ever living crap out of your algae. This costs approximately 30 bucks to assemble with the following parts:

Have you considered going with an inTank rack with fuge? Then you can run chaeto along with media. Incidentally, sort of just realized that the best call for lighting this in sump/wet area scrubber would be the waterproof LEDs that inTank sells:

Thanks for the links. I have been looking for LEDs to supplement my halides and this kit might just do the trick.

I did think about running a fuge with chaeto and media but according to what i read this is better and easier than all that.
As for the lighting, since i am only going to have it get algae on one side then i can get away with lighting it from the outside though the 4x4 area.

Algae turf scrubber in place seems to flow good just need the light.
