I have light brown material all over my rocks and sand. It started to show up on thursday after some mental irregularity monday evening. My bicolor angel (ive had him for almost 2 yrs) wigged out and started biting at several corals. I let him go for 2 days because he wasnt doing any damage. But when it seemed to be getting worse I decided to get him out wed evening. Well that meant draining the tank and removing most of the rock. Which seems to have stirred up something! I put all the original tank water back in and Ammonia trites and trates are are still all at 0. Any ideas on where I went wrong?

sand is shallow, 1-1 1/2 inches, everything was out 30 minutes max, I siphoned with a 3/4 hose and refilled with a mag 7, as quickly as I could

Even with that short of a disruption, it's entirely possible that this is what has caused your algea outbreak. I don't think you have much to worry about, but the nutrient level in the water from a small die off would all get taken up in the algea and used to make that awesome brown stuff. That's why you aren't testing it.
