iv had this 75 gallon with 40 sump with macro in the sump and a overrated octopus skimmer running for a few months actually like 5 months. i transferred everything other then the sand and water from my old tank, this sand is the special grade all dry sand and i made all new salt water. my problem is not im getting these diatoms that seem to be turning into brown strings every day. my cheato doesn't seem to grow neither does my red macro algea but this algea and also green scum coms back every day. Tested my nitrates there zero i dont have a phosphate meter so im not sure i use rodi which pumps out 000. my reeflux bulbs were used for 3 months probably but have been sitting in storage for about a year + . so here are the pics any help please it seems like it could possibly be stunting the coral growth or even hurting the corals im not sure. i run carbon and gfo. weekly waterchanges 6 gallon

i'm going through the same crap. I ordered a gfo reactor but i might add carbon to it. My scenario is the same though. i moved everything from one tank to another and i think some po4 is leaching out.

i figure maybe its that and the lights or something and my sand could maybe be releasing anything : / idk cant pinpoint what it is i run gfo but hasnt seemed to help can anyone say that the hanna checker is 100% a good way to go or wait to spend alot o money on a larger more expensive hanna meter.

siphon and siphon. That is the battle. Diatom and cyno are extremely well at creating food for its survival even if your phosphate and nitrates are low. Flow will only spread it and water changes may help but siphoning is the key

Your nitrate reading of zero is because all of the nuisance algea is consuming it all. I had a bad problem with diatoms when I started up my 40b and I did alot of syphoning and got 10 nassarius snails. It cleaned up in about a week and only get a small amount every now and then. Also try to syphon out as much as you can when doing your PWCs as this should help.

Try to lower your PHs alittle more to get somemore flow on the SB. It may blow it around alittle at first, but it'll calm down eventually.

Alysiak00- adding carbon to your reactor isn't going to help with algea, but it will make your water crystal clear !! I don't use a reactor, but I use phosguard and chemipure elite in my HOB filter to combat any kind of phosphate/nitrate/silicates. I don't want to tell you what kind because i've never used a reactor, but i'm sure someone will chime in.

I know carbon won't battle algae I just figured I might put some in it. Idk yet what I'm gonna do, it hasn't arrived yet
