firemouth:

The sand is packaged by Old Castle for walmart, and there is a picture of the bag on page 13 of this thread. Its an orange bag with green lettering.

The stuff I found is identical to that, and from my understanding is identical to south down. I haven't been able to find anything but quickcrete at HD, so I haven't directly compared.

this may already be posted, but the area code for the Ft Pierce location of Marcona Ocean Industries has changed. It is now 772. Also the name has changed to AES Atlantis.

Howdy
wanted everyone to know i just had hd crack open a new pallet for me (springfield, va) and the one in the mclean area said they would be getting some in 'tomorrow, but we've been waiting for a week'. 4.99 a bag.
as a side note, my bag resembled the most recent pic in the thread, but also contained a statement that it was not for aquarium use.
it had the same stock info as posted by Groove, so i grabbed it anyway thinking they must be supplying something to the pet stores of the world and making a larger profit selling it as a 'specialized' item. it would probably be a tough sell to jack up the price too far at hd since they aren't the only sand in the box there. it probably cost less to put the 'warning' on the bag and turn lots of folks back to the pet store...
blah blah blah

WOW !!!!!!!
You can make a lot of milkshakes with that good luck

The thread that won't die. I have Southdown in 2 tanks & 600 lbs stockpiled for a 125g & a 55g. Gotta luv it.
Where is Grumpy anyways? I hope he isn't notified everytime someone posts to this thread,

No problem with silt at all. Clear tanks after less then 24 hours.

I second scuba_dave's observation.
I just set up my 120G 3 weeks ago.
I dumped 250lbs of SD and added water,
only to realize that the sand did compact
exposing the egg-crate. So here i dump
100lbs of the sand into a well settled
and clear tank.

I then went about and removed the scum/white
froth with a small fish scoop net. I then cleaned
the tank around the water line with clean kitchen
towels. It was nothing more than fine particles
of sand. I turned off all pumps. After 2 days, it
is a clear tank.

I had about 2/8 of an inch of fine white silt on top.
Now with the LR in there for over 2 weeks, i don't
see the fine silt. They have all been stirred up and
i see worm crawl marks in the DSB. I am very happy
so far.
I picked up 5lbs of Caribean LS from my LFS and
dumped it behind the LR to add diversity. I will be
covering it with some SD soon, since i don't like the
looks of the LFS sand and i like the looks of the SD.

My hot tub, which I can use year round. I imagine you use that as an ice skating rink in the winter?

LOL
No, and it is real ugly then.
But I have a jacuzzi in the master bedroom bath room

But where way off subject here, we where talking about siltdown.

I bought 3 bags of Southdown and from all I have read I thought I could rinse the silt out of it. Its funny I also thought that there was one thing in this hobby you could get cheap sand. Well I was wrong on both accounts nothing in this hobby is cheap unless you want to put up with the silt FOREVER.

I just moved my 55g about 3 weeks ago no siltdown in it, it cleared up in under 5 hours I doubt that any siltdown tank setup for a year could have done this, take a look if you want, pics also http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=214563
So after I tried to wash the SH_TDOWN for over an hour it still was cloudy, I then dumped that 50lbs washed bag of silt and returned the other 2 bags

Some people know how to setup a tank, some don't. Read the thread for those that want to decide for themselves. Majority rules is my opinion.

FYI..

I didn't read all of this thread, but mainly the first page. But maybe this can help some people.

When referring to the SKU number, they are talking about the number that HOMEDEPOT created. All retailers sometimes has their own SKU. Southdown will not know of this number as their own, but instead they will know of it as their binding product number with HD. SKU stands for Store Keeping Unit.

Now, UPC's on the other hand should be universal anywhere you go. Hence, UPC stands for Universal Product Code. So, in the future, since you know the UPC of this sand bag, I would say that it is a 80% chance that you'll be lucky enough to find the exact same brand of sand. (unless of course they started using different types of grain.)

Sorry if this was already said, but I just had to add it.. hehe:D
