All you EVER wanted to know about Southdown

The upc code has to be in this thread somewere. Home depo should be able to get it for you.

Has anybody read this thread and still tried to wash Southdown.

If so you need to read things again. The creatures that live in a deep sand bed need the particle sizes in the silt in order to live and breed. The key to keep the silt down in a new tank is to put live sand on top of the new sand. The slime and liveing stuff in the live sand binds it together. Once you do this it keeps the silt down till things grow into it..

Question????????????
Is there a good HOW TO book on deep sand beds. Not ideas application.

HELP!!! I need to know quikly how do I do the silica test on sand to make sure it is silica free. I know you use vinegar, but what am I looking for? Walmart sells OLD CASTLE here and I want to make sure it is silica free before I do buy it. I need about 10-13 bags of this stuff and I don't want to waste money. If it works---and Old Castle is the "right one" EVERYONE here in Char. NC. and on this website will know Walmart is the place---TONIGHT!!! HELP MY FELLOW REEF EXPERTS!!!

You're looking for bubbles. If the sand is calcium carbonate based, it will dissolve. If there's no fizz, it's silica sand.

I live in wichita Ks. I am going to do some hunting and see what I can find around here and will post my findings for others in the area. Also if you have any info on the subject in the are please post.

can someone pleeze post a pic of the correct bag of southdown sand that i should buy from home depot?

This is what I purchased from Home Depot in Manchester, NH today. It will no longer say Southdown on the bag, and will come from Old Castle Stone Products in PA. The bag looks the same as the 'old' Southdown bags, but Old Castle bought out southdown. It's sterilized, silica free, and passes the vinegar test. It's 518-879, and the SKU is 090604201002. Currently going for 5.99/50 lb. bag.

So far the only thing I have come up with here is that HD has what they call qwick- crete not sure of the spelling and Wal Mart has stuff called Garden Basic which I am going to check out today...the search continues.

How come some of the southdown bags say "Not for aquarium use" at the bottom. Are those okay to use?

I believe the current take on that is because #1..they don't want to be held responsible, and #2..they'd rather make the 10x as much on the bags they sell as "aquarium use". In other words...everybody thinks the warning is a scam. Believe what you want, my tank is all SD.

I too have purchased Old Castle (re: Southdown) with the same warning. I made inquiries to some of the aquarium industry experts and was told the same manufacturers/distributers supply the "same" sand to the differing industries; aquarium, building, etc., where it is repackaged and priced accordingly. In all likelyhood the Old Castle sand at $6.50 for 50lbs is the same as CarribSea sugar sand at $40.00 for 44lbs.

Is there nobody in the midwest that is interested in this sand? Everyone that has posted in the last 16 pages is from the northeast. Anybody in CO interested in getting some of this? I'll be looking into this in the coming days, just wondering if there are others....

Intersted isn't the problem. They company is located in PA and let's face it...sand is heavy. Why would a HD in California ship "play sand" from PA when they can get it closer by!

HD is in the business of making customers happy. If the price is right, they'll do what it takes. I'm not worried about that part, but if I need to buy an entire pallet, I'd like to know there are others in the area that want some, thus my request for those whom are interested.
