This afternoon I was at a LFS on the IL side, not fairview, looking for a way to try to get my bulk heads off and the store owner was talking to a customer that was wanting to set up a new sw tank. He was telling her that she would need LR and LS, and told her how many pounds and the $$. She said that was outragous when she could get it for free. She stated that she and her husband were going to FL in a couple of weeks to go snorkleing, and they could bring back all that they could carry. The store owner stood there and said "That sound like a pretty good plan, bring me back some" Now I was under the impression that you shouldn't use sand or rock from trips like that. One unless you get miles off shore you are dealing with polluted seas, shipping lanes and such. That the sand and rock you bring home and throw in your tank Could protencally kill your whole system. Also, isn't this illegal, Isn't the areas protected, so you don't have 1000's of people running down trying to save a few buck, and totally unsetting the balance of the few reefs that are there. I thought he should of have told her the truth, Instead of encouageing her. I am right about the contaminated LR and LS aren't I , Over the last few years I throw away probly 200 lbs of sand and rock that well meaning friends have brought back from FL. and mexico vacations.

From what I have read taking sand is usually ok in florida, but rock is strickly prohibited ! Major fines for even taking a small rock !

go to tampabaysaltwater.com and read the different articles, history, info sheets. Even the sand they harvest for you is about 50 or more ft deep in the ocean which they better take scuba gear. I'm not sure about the legality of sand but I know rock is a major fine if they get caught. And even out in the deeper areas most of it is leased by companies just for those purposes. No natural occuring rock can be taken by anyone, just the rock they place there and aquaculture.

That is why I don't understand him not telling her this, The fines she would face. Plus isn't anything that you get same off the beaches and maybe like in the bay areas contaminated. fuels and such in the water from all the ships and just recreational type vechicals. That is no way to start a tank. You won't get any where, and if you possibly could wouldn't it take a very long time and alot of $$$. Maybe that is want he is figuring on?

Or maybe he just doesn't know the rules. I would "like to think" that is the case. That would be like me giving a set of exercises for a patient to do that would purposely aggravate a problem. That can happen often enough without "trying" to do it btw. But would be unethical to do it on purpose.
