Amazing Coral Behavior

Several months ago I purchased a single stalk of pulsing xenia. It came on a small rock about 1/3 the size of a golf ball. When I brought it home I super glued the rock onto a larger piece of branching rock. About 4-5 weeks ago I moved it from center of the tank off to the right to avoid most of the power head force so as to be able to observe the pulsing behavior. Over the last month I watched it streeeetch out about double it's typical length, attach itself mid-stalk to a different portion of the rock it was glued to and then release itself from it's original attachment point. Absolutely amazing. It literallly moved itself closer to the light. I love this hobby.

Yes, I'd like to add that if you don't isolate this coral, it will take over your tank. I used to have some, but eventually just got rid of every bit, rather than chance it going places I didn't want it. It will always move upwards, so if you start it up high in the tank and are prepared to scrape it off the glass now and then, you should be okay.

I have heard repeatedly that it can be quite aggressive in colonizing the tank. Since I bought it I have yet to see it grow new stalks. So far it has simply moved about 2 inches to the left and slightly higher.

Mine walk to the light. Placing one at the bottom of a pile ofrubble will get you lots of frags.

in my previous reef aquarium (which was very brightly illuminated) Xenia would grow downwards. I think the DSB helped them to proliferate as well :lmao:
