I am looking to invest in a quality monitor for easy pH testing. I hate picking out different shades of colors from liquid kits. Is the American Marine monitor any good? It seems to be widely used.

I've used them for a number of years.
Keep your probes clean and calibrate every 3-6 months. They are a solid device.

Is the probe calibration regardless of the use schedule? Like say I don't use it at all or only minimally within a 3 month period - would I still need to calibrate?

I would calibrate a lot more often than that.

Yes, the calibration should be done whether you use it or whether you don't. Actually, if you don't use it all the time and the probe isn't kept wet then you should calibrate before every measurement.

At the very least, you shouldn't trust any readings that don't seem right unless you recalibrate and remeasure first.

Sorry i was assuming you were talking about the one that stays in 24/7 not the handheld unit. the 24/7 one is in the 100.00 range

It probably comes with storage instructions. My Oakton was stored with a bit of wet paper towel in the container to keep the probe from drying out.
