Amphiprion percula "Onxy" (Onyx Percula Clown) Breeding Log!

Dan, it all depends on how small you want them! AT 43 days old, Batch I is approximatley 1/2" TL with phenomal color, and those aren't for sale and won't be in the future (seeing as how they're our first).

The first of Batch III might be able to leave around January or February of 2007. Depending on their size and quality, the price will 'range', anywhere from $10 to $70 each, and I'm saving at least a couple of those for folks to whom I owe a huge debt of gratitude. I'm hoping to have a big batch (hopefully this next one) ready by March 1 or so...depending on logitistics and demand, I know some, if not all, will go to a few select LFS's who really, really want them :)

FWIW, the larval collector is set up and running well, the lights just went out...now we just sit and wait for the hatch!

Matt

I wont be ready for them for atleast 4-5 months, so no worrys.
Also, matt do you think lowering the temp would help, because in the ocean dosent the temperature decrease at night. Maybe another way the larvae no its night time and time to hatch. Just some thought. Keep us posted.

Batch IV - well, the official word - total disaster. There are maybe 40-50 eggs sitting unhatched. I've collected a whopping 3 viable larvae. IN the larval collector, ONE larvae, DOA, and nothing else. I don't have a CLUE what's happened, don't know where all those hatched larvae went, nothing. Tearing things down and giving up for tonight. BEYOND disappointed. Not sure I can blame the larval collector except that I've decided I once again need to refine the design (want the intake right at the surface, not 5-6" below the surface as it is now).

Totally, utterly PO'd. I tried blasting the remaining unhatched eggs with the turkey baster (encouraged eggs to hatch on prior batches). This time around, they did not hatch, but a few were blown off the rocks.

Guess I'm going to try a temp of 82F next time. Not much else to say other than this go-round was basically a total loss.

FWIW,

Matt

When I was collecting eggs from my friend's reef tank, his eggs often did the 2 day hatch thing. I never had much success with the second day. Those eggs may have been too old, or something else wrong.

Bummer. The good thing is, they will lay another nest, and you get to try again.

Batch III - I'm having more than a bad luck streak I guess....this morning I've found 1 from batch III dead on the bottom of the breeder net, + an additional three are missing. So now the headcount is 4 instead of 8. CRAPOLA!

Matt

Well I've turned the heater up a notch or two on the Percula's tank in preparation for the next go-round, that's the best I can do for now :)

Matt

Hey Carl,

Actually your post is a few days "behind"...the hatches happened Saturday and Sunday respectively, so it will be at least around Thanksgiving provided the parents lay their eggs on schedule. I'm hoping for another Friday or Saturday spawn.

In the meantime I'm ramping up the empty larval tank as a copepod culture with some SS rots as well...might give the mandarins another shot or two while the percs are "under construction". IF I get some mandarins to a certain point, I can always conjoin the GBG and Mandarin babies to make room for another perc hatch, at least that's the working plan.

Matt

Ya, Meant new set of eggs :) My batch 4 is at 14 or 15 days on the two day hatch thing. Hear's a pic.

Batch five is into day three and at quick count I got about fifty still around, Best turnout so far if they make it. Lost about 30 within 4 hours and lost another 30 the next day, but the rest look good and like they are eating well.
Here is at two days.

So I'm breathing a sigh of relief this evening...Mama and Little Man were cleaning the spawning site again, but thankfully no eggs laid today :)

I know what you're thinking...why would that be good? Well, if they can lay Friday, that will put hatching at the Saturday following Thanksgiving. Spawn on Saturday, I don't have to worry about them until next Sunday! The "scheduling" allows me some well deservered holiday down time ;)

That's the news!

Matt

Good deal Matt...My guys just laid them out at about 4:30 pm today. Seemed about a day or two late not sure why...Getting into the room issue:) I guess that not a bad thing.
Matt or Kathy...how old, or do you put young fish in the same 10 gal tank..going to set up some new shelves, just wondering if say putting 25 day with 35 day or so can go together or if you keep separated and/or for how long?
You got this batch Matt I can fell it!!!1 Good luck...CARL

Cool Thanks....BTW What video attached software I need as a viewer for your vids, a few worked but not the time elapsed one and some other...just wondering...Carl
