Thanks! You should go for it! It's the best...I've been teased by a few buddies for the multi-tank system...it may be crazy...but it works. They just don't grasp why I didn't just go for the larger DT. I just wish I would've gone with the deep blue 80g frag tank as the main display and maybe stacked either two rimless cubes or two 40B's. So if you go for it...go for the best equipment you can from the beginning and plan carefully or you will have regrets.
In regards to your questions...
" how does your return section work out, being that it's so small?"
I have no problems with my return section...it fits it's purpose. I was able to fit a huge mag 12 in there and replaced that with an Eheim 1262 after the mag's screws rusted...so no problems. The only other things in my return section are my two float switches...1 for the ato and a higher one to shut off the skimmer if the sump is too full to prevent the skimmer from overflowing. I keep a decent amount of flow in my tanks so my "surface area" is quite turbulent which I believe adds to the evaporation. I keep a 20g brute filled with rodi in the closet next to the 2 30g macro tanks so it's covered.
"Do you notice that it has to be topped off very frequently?"
Since I basically have 4 tanks plumbed together including sump which makes for a lot of open surface area...I have a lot of evaporation...which is what my ato is for.
In regards to the number of sections in your sump...everyone will give you different advice/opinions on it...so I avoid giving advice. I say research multiple sources and find what you believe will work best for you. Things that work for some in this hobby...do not work for others, etc.
Gonna check out your thread in a few...
Hope I was able to help...
In regards to my dog, thanks...he's the man (dog.) haha
