an addict's new rimless build

After some consideration, I've decided to move my home office upstairs to one of the spare bedrooms and turn my current space into SPS dreamland with another tank. My current tank (in my signature) has had its' share of ups and downs through the first year, but things are coming around nicely and I like the direction it's heading.

On to the new tank! I recently ordered a new rimless aquarium (48"x24"x20) 100 gallon tank from Coast to Coast Aquariums here in New Jersey. They built my 195 gallon tank and sump, so I only thought it fitting for them to build this one.

The tank will be viewable from the front, right and top and will be Starphire glass on the right and front panels. The back and left panels will be coated black by C2C. The overflow box will be located in the rear left corner, and will have a 1.5" drain and a 3/4" return to accommodate an Eheim 1260 return pump that will return to the tank and feed a gfo reactor. I've chosen to run carbon passively in the sump as well. I also think 2 part dosing will be used on this tank instead of a calcium reactor and kalkwasser like my 195.

Other than the return pump, I'm thinking 2 Vortech MP40's for flow. Since the tank will be SPS dominated, I'm torn between what lighting to choose. While I prefer halides on the larger tank, I want to try something new on this tank. My first thought is to go with a tried and true ATI Sunpower fixture (6 bulbs) 48". At 20" top to bottom, with possibly 19" of water when running, I think this would be more than enough light to keep everything happy. It won't be a minimalist aquascape. I've tried that and prefer the more full look with plenty of caves for fish to hide and some shaded areas for a few lower light corals.

The tank will be run with Berlin methodology, however I'm not sure as of yet which skimmer will be making its' home in my sump. For this, I ask for other people's recommendations and experiences. I'll take my time with this build, and will be posting pictures in the next few weeks of the tank as its' being built.

Thanks for following along!

I'm doing the same exact size rimless. I went with an 8x54 watt sunpower and a jns sk2 skimmer. I'm looking forward to seeing your c2c tank.

Me too Drae! Is your Sunpower the dimmable one? It seems that anything over 4 bulbs at 48" length is now only available in the dimmable version. I guess they're pushing people to spring for the hybrid.

Mine isn't the dimmable version. I bought this light new in 2011 then sold it to a buddy when I took down my 150 then bought it back a couple months ago. I was unaware they aren't available anymore. Good thing he took his tank down! My wife laughed like I told a jike when I showed her the 8x54 watt hybrid. I have dreams about that light. lol

What??? Another tank??? When did you decide this??? :hmm5:

2 mp40's is going to create some nice flow!!!! just dont blast any out of the tank.

The good thing is I have a tank to look at and maintain while this one cycles and I get to plan it thoroughly and get the equipment I want. Not feeling anxious to get it RIGHT NOW will only help. If I showed my wife the price of the ATI LED hybrid she'd probably faint.

Any type of Sunpower is awesome !

Just trying to decide between the 36" or 48". I know either will be fine. I've already got $240 in Radium bulb replacements on the big tank per year so the 6 bulb looks better from an economical standpoint.

You know I like a lot of flow Steve! I still only have my 4 Vortech pumps halfway turned up right now on the 195, and the Tunze 6105 opposes the return pump in the middle of the tank and creates different swirling surges depending on which Vortechs are randomly cycling through Reef Crest mode in an anti sync pattern from the left or right.

^^^^Reading this sounds so confusing...:spin3:

I guess i would go with the 48" six bulb.
