Hey man, hate away. I am just trying to be negative about it. LOL.
Nah, just trying to point out a couple of things regarding this style fixture.
If you can save money, then alot of people can save money doing the same thing.
Have you checked the prices on replacement ballast for them?
Actually, I bought a light setup from a local reefer that looks exactly like the second unit. It has (polished aluminum) reflectors though. I cut holes on either end cap for fans and is working just fine. Ugly, but I have an in wall tank so it doesn't matter.
I had one corner that had a touch of rust so when I was putting in the fans I cleaned that and spray painted the spot along with the exposed edge from the fan hole.
Works fine for me and I spent a total of 100 bucks. *shrug*.

One more thing, mine does not rest on the tank proper. Mine is suspended from the ceiling and is about 1 inch from the top.
This fixture has been on my tank since September or so and who knows how long the guy before me had it on his tank.
Rust is a trivial concern in my opinion... the only place it will rust is where the paint my chip. Respray it, problem solved.

Seems like they are really wide...you would need a 24"+ wide tank for the first one, and that will be reflecting a lot of the end bulbs out of the aquarium because it is 24" wide. The other is 20", so it would be ok...

brandon what kind of lights were you thinking of going to and why these? is it the cost of lighting or are you just trying to find a cheap alternative> pm me and i got a set of 150 hqi with bulbs ballast and seperate pendants that will probaly work for you and they are electronic. sorry if i'm off base. btw how is the clown doing?

Maybe look into tek t5 retro hellolights has then $115.00 I have 2x54 over my 100g with the "tru" bulbs they sell for $10.00 They are not Ice caps but the price is good and you can add them 2 at a time

Skinny, this was primarily just to see if its ever been done, and if it could be done. I do need some lights for the new 55 tho.
The clown is doing ~. They told me she ate some on monday, but I called yesterday and they said she wasn't really eating, but her stress marks were going away. So honestly, lol I don't really know.

Guys... where exactly do you think our "hobby" T5 stuff comes from? The fixture will be fine. The BULBS are T5, so any T5 ballast will work of you ever need to replace it.
The endcaps are standard T5 endcaps. It is equiped with T5 SLR reflectors.
So the only questions is with regard to the fixture itself. Is it built well? Likely just as good as any of the hobby stuff, and likely better than some of the low end hobby stuff.
