And so it begins ...

That's Sketchup !
I see your point about the top braces. I've done alot of reading on aquarium cabnet making and plan to cover the top in 1/2" plywood to evenly distribute the load. Myabe someone can chime in on the center baces. :)

So we went up to The Fish Bowl today. They were out of those used 30G aquariums for $30. Then the guy procedes to tell me they have used 40L's for the same price. SCORE !

So now I know my fuge will be a 40L. Now to design it.

BTW.... They had about 3 more. Anyone looking to make a nice frag tank or big fuge should check them out.

About the overflows, they are loud, I have 2 on my 120 and man do I wish I had a drilled tank, it drives my aunt crazy, which in turn drives me nuts, I would take it up to sea in the city and let them see what they think about drilling the thing, I've known a handful of people who have had their tanks drilled there, and wish I had done it. If you are looking for a skimmer I think I have a spare red sea classic laying around in the garage. As for the pump aqua eco had a bunch in the garage room if you want to go external, which would cut down on some of the heat going into the tank, otherwise I would go with a mag 12 probably a mag 18.

Make sure that whatever skimmer you plan on using will fit under the stand with plenty of clearance before you set the height of the stand in stone. From the sketch it looks like you are limiting your skimmer height to the low part of the 20" range. Things could get very tight depending on the placement of your upper braces, baffles in your sump, etc. Just something else to think about before your start cutting your wood.

Before you start to build the stand make sure you have your sump, skimmer and anything else your going to have in the stand. That way you know you have enough room for it all. Take your time and get everything first so you only have to build it once.

Im still working on getting you the pics of my plumbing, I forgot to bring home the camera.

jsl6v8 PM me about the skimmer.

Good call on the height. I just realized when I deduct the 7 1/2 inches for 2 x 4's and plywood, that only gives me 22 1/2 inches. Good call !!!
I guess I need to bump up the height by at least 6-8 inches.

lusenut2, I definitely plan on getting all my under cabnet supplies before I start the the cabnet build.
I'm not 100% sure if this 40 will work. It's 48" and the display is 60".
I think I can pull this off IF I can keep everything (Return pump, skimmer, ect) in the sump. Then I'll have a foot for power suppies & timers.
I'd like to use an external pump, but man this is gonna be a tight squeze.

Oh, anyone have any imput on the top center braces ?
Can they be omited ?
That would also give me a little room to work with in the cabnet.

Cabinet

Cabinet

I started on the cabinet today. Here's some pics of the frame with the sump in it. Man it's a tight squeeze !

I'll have pics tomorrow of it with plywood and trimmed.

So it cost about $80 for the 2 x 4's and the plywood for the cabnet.... I just spent another $66 on trim. Then tomorrow, I still have to get the material for the doors.. This is getting expensive, LOL.

Thanks !

The BTA is hangging in there. it's getting daily feedings of brine shrimp, formula 2, and pieces of krill. It will take some time, but I'm prepared for the long haul.

Cabnet Is DONE!!!

Cabnet Is DONE!!!

Yay !!!
I finally got all the hardware, finished the doors, put a second coat of stain on everything, and got it all assembled. Alas the cabnet is done.

3 days and about $250 in materials....

Let me know what you guys think ?

Thanks!
We went all out on the trim and spent a fortune. But we wont be upgrading bigger for a long time, so we wanted it to look real nice. :)

Youre welcome :) Its so nice, it looks like a purchased piece of furniture. If I wouldnt have the progress, I would have sworn you bought it from Thomasville !

Wow....Thanks, I'm speechless.

I guess being in the carpentry trade most of my life pays off. Funny thing is, I've never really taken the time to make anything luxerious for myself. I fix stuff around the house, but never have done anything like this before, lol.

Fuge

Fuge

I finished doing the new laminate flooring in our house, so back to the build.
I finished my sump/fuge today. I was going to use a 40L, but quickly figured out it was too lage.
So I used a 20L and copied an exact design from melevs site.
It's not pretty, but it's functional. :)

Left area is return, center is refugium, and right is overflows and skimmer pump. I'll be using a Aqua C EV-180 on the outside of the sump.
