Anderson Family Reef - 1200 Gallon System

Well, it is not entirely harmless. I believe you are referring to methylene blue. Here is the MSDS sheet on it. As you can see it is not very friendly at increased doses so it was probably very smart of you to get your kid to the hospital just in case.

Yes it was methylene blue. We are talking almost 30 years ago. Turns out he had enough to color his tongue and not much more. I ran the front gate at Pease AFB taking him in, created a big mess with security.

As I think about it. Those of you with kids sure are brave. I look at all the things I have done without any kids. I can't even imagine what it would be like to try and keep this saltwater tank with little kids. I do love the stories because I can see it all happening from the trucks in the sump, to using the magnet holding a pump to clean the glass. I completely understand a kid giving the fish a drink of milk or apple juice (after all Daddy forgets to give those fish a drink so they most be thirsty).

I'll be moving next year to Florida to be closer to the grand kids. After hearing all these stories I do believe the fish room will have a lock on the door.

Lock in the door is a must and some child locks on the stand doors!! 😜👍

Retnal scanner on the door to get in the room to see it.

Come on.... get with the times. That is why I have a dedicated fish room.

I could wire the doors with 100. combination lock.... There are a whole lot things but your post brought about an interesting thought.

I have a Brittle Star from Fiji. The interesting thing about them is they have fatter legs and they look more spiky. The point her is my wife HATES it. This thing has decided to park itself center stage about 4" back from the front glass under a rock but always has a leg hanging out. What I have noticed is that with little girls they HATE it and it is creepy top them. So they alone actually act like a guard dog.

On the other there are little boys. I don't think a reef shark in the tank will keep fire trucks out of the sump. In fact where a little girl is creped out by the brittle star moving a little boy would go and put anything he can find into the tank to get it to move. All I need to do is come up with something for the little boys......................There is no hope

Good point!

I'm old school but it sounds like I had better catch up with the cool new technology! Heck I still run MH and VHO's! :bum:

Joe, I'm with you on this! My little man calls my brittle star an octopus! He thinks it's soo cool! It creeps out my daughter though. Mine is in the sump... Maybe that's why he keeps putting toys in the sump to attract the star out to play!

Open for boy suggestions!?!? :hmm5:

I have skimmed through about 20 pages now and may have overlooked it, but what type of lighting do you use and what are you cycle times?

I am looking at a combination of PAR38s and either T5 or LED units from Rapid LED to light my two side by side 245 gallon reefs. Growth rate is not as important to me as color, and I love the color of your system. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I use 400 watt metal halide (6 hours), VHO (10 hours -2 hours before and after the MH) and LED spotlights (same as VHO), LED moons (4 hours after all lights go out)... Hope that helps!

So the skimmer was half mast today while I was doing my quick visual once over on the tank so I looked in the sump and found a half of a soggy taquito floating against the barrier...
Anyone know if taquitos are bad for an SPS reef tank?

The fish looked hungry so your son handled it. After all he was just helping you out.

Sounds like your clean up crew is to small
