Anemone Acclimation?

Just wondering how ya'll go about acclimating your anemones, it's about time to add one to my tank and I am looking for some ideas! Also, HI ReefCentral! :fun2:

I drip acclimate. I place the anemone in a bowl and slowly drip water in with an airline tube. I then dump half of the water out and keep filling. I normally do it over 30 minutes.

How long has you tank been setup?

It's common practice for Anemone to be shipped with little or almost no water. This seems to be much less stressful for the Anemone and IMO, should be a more common practice among coral shippers as well, but that's a whole different thread!!

Of the 2 anemone I've had, both were purchased locally, and bagged in water. I acclimated the same way as described above. Also, when I've moved them to new or different tanks, I've acclimated them the same way as described.

However, I wonder what the best way to acclimate would be, for an anemone shipped with little or almost no water?

I would still do the drip or water addition but at a slower rate. It would also help if the container that the anemone is in could float in the sump or tank so as to maintain the water temp.

The tank has been up and running for about 6 months, just a few small fish in it, 65gal, RR, dripping was what I intended to do. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't some big secret I was missing out on! :idea:

One tip that a lot of newbies don't know is that anemones do water changes. One day, the anemone will be happy and bubbly. Then the next, they look completely deflated and on the verge of death. Its a normal process, so as long as the nem is still attached to the rock/sandbed, just let it do its thing and don't freak out.

Don't be surprised if your nem does this once he gets into your tank.

Good point! That always freaks out a new anemone owner.

Thanks for the advice, that is one thing i have observed before in the LFS, just makes them more interesting imo!

Another thing that should be done is to acclimate the new anemone to your lights. I prefer to use window screening -- 3 layers, with removing a layer every 5-7 days.

The stuff that screen doors and window screens are made out it --- too keep the bugs out when the windows/doors are open.
