Anemone Experts!!!! H. Crispa Green - Help me decide

Hi - I saw an anemone yesterday in my LFS that looked exactly like this one I found online through Rod's website this morning.

Because I'm at work I can't just upload the picture - so I had to post the link... (is that allowed?)

http://www.rods-reef.com/bigPic.php?prID=37

Anyway - does anyone have any experience with this type of Crispa?

I hadn't heard of or seen it before yesterday - then stumbled upon it on Rods site this morning looking for some percs :)

What do you all think?

The one at my LFS has been there for at least a month or so - but it's pretty small... I would say about 3 inches. It has great coloring though - it looks identical to the picture purple oral disk, tentacles with green tips...

So - what do we think? Should I get it? It looks pretty cool....

Ok - you would think... I even wondered about that when I saw it in the store... however - the base is white with white verecue... Don't mag's have colored base?

I just got Rod on the phone about his percs and asked him about the anemone (which he sold a while ago).... he said to be honest he called it a crispa because it was the best he could come up with - but that he hadn't ever seen one like it (and he has fairly extensive anemone experience IMO)... He said he almost wished that he hung onto it so that he could see how it developed. He himself had it for a little over a year before he sold it to a local reefer...

The thing that made him wonder about whether it was a crispa or not - was the fact that it didn't get big fast - he had it for over a year and it only grew about an inch... This reassures my concern that the one I saw was only about 3 inches...

Isn't this weird?! Does anyone else have ideas on what it could be?

Can mag's have white bases?

Are you planning on getting a bigger tank? I hope so, I guess you could put it in your 29 with your other H.malu . Those anemones disc's get 18 inches across, so there would be no room for corals and water changes would be very important. If I were you..I would let this one go untill I got a bigger tank..just my 2 cents.

So you think it is a crispa then Christina?

He had his for over a year and it didn't grow more than an inch... Definitely in the next year I will have a different tank set up when I get moved... I would always plan my tanks around my anemones or find them a better home if they don't do well in mine...

But I'm not convinced it's a Crispa - but I'm not sure what else it could be?

Do you think it could be a Malu color variant?

I'm not sure..I would have to see more pictures..the one rod has looked like a mag to me because in the picture it wasn't in the sand and the way its disc was shaped. Then also the green tips made me think mag too. I've seen several mags that looked like that..again I'd have to see more pictures. How is your H. Malu in the 14 gallon doing?

I don't know much about mags - but do they have to have a colored base?

I asked him where in the tank it was kept and he thinks he remembers that it was on the rocks where the rocks and sand met....

The base of the one in the store looks identical to the base of the 2 anemone's I have at home...

As for how my 14g one is doing - it's doing better! I think I may have shocked it with the extra lights - so I'm just leaving it alone for a little while - but I did clean the tank yesterday... OH - and when I did I think I found what added to it's problem!!! (I can't believe I almost forgot to mention this) My salinity had dropped to 1.020!!!!! Poor thing! I'm trying to raise it slowly back to 1.026 by topping off with salt water - yesterday I raised it to 1.021.. I'm leaving the top open to encourage evaporation so that I can top off with salt water... I feel so bad...

in the book "anemone fishes and their host sea anemones." it says..cylindrical column of uniform bright colour( commonly blue, green, red, white, chestnut brown).. I have never seen a one with a white column. The ones at your lfs might be an H. Crispa but the one in that picture doesn't look like one to me.
btw you are so lucky to have an lfs that will offer healthy host sea anemones. I haven't found an lfs yet that doesn't have a lot of bleached anemones.

Ok - well I'll have to get you a picture of the one at the store because I have to tell you it looks 100% identical to the picture Rod had -that's what threw me for such a loop!

I'll see if I can stop by tonight and take some pictures of it at the store!

That pic you posted at the top of the thread looks like a mag. for sure. I have heard of a mag with a white column, but I've never actually seen one.
