Hey,

I ordered a S. mertensii anemone online. He's not doing great at the moment and I will most likely do QT treatment with Cipro for 10 days.

Apparently mertensii don't have sticky tentacles and have a 'spotted' base. This guy is sticky and I can't see any spots on its base!

Please see enclosed picture for reference.

Your thoughts would be most welcomed.

Thanks,

the foot or base of a S. mertensii is very distinct. lack of spots would be an indicator of a different species.

can you snap a pick of the underside at all?

I agree. All of the mertensii I've seen have bright orange to magenta spots that get more pronounced and even blend into each other towards the bottom of the foot.

Send a pictures of it. Best way to ID a lot of the anemones is a over all picture , tentacles picture and column especially near the oral plates and the foot.

There's a nice one on bluezoos collectors section. For the small price of only $875 it could be yours. If the price drops by $700 or so I'll grab it.

LOL it looked nice but not Rolls Royce nice. Maybe BMW nice.

For some reason once something reaches the Collector's Choice section, the price inflates A LOT.

It is a myth the mertensii don't have sticky tentacles. FWIW, severe stress will sometimes cause the mertens spots to fade a bit but usually, in person, a mertens is very different than any other carpet in the way it holds itself and can generally be recognized as being very different than a haddoni or gigantea.
