Anemone population explosion

So a quick over view. DT is a 165 bowfront built into the wall. Started off with 1 GBTA. About a 5 years ago it split and it was really cool b/c now i had 2. Well there is a bay window and at night the moon will shine on the tank. Each full moon going back 5 years my GBTA will split and i mean at least 25% will split each month. I have been selling around 40+ every year over the past 5 years. My tank has sadly turned into a GBTA tank with a couple of other LPS due to the GBTA killing all other corals. My clowns love it and it gives the tank a different look and feel. My question to you guys is have any of you run into this.
I know the lunar cycle is a huge aspect in the ocean but was curious if it changes in a aquarium setting. I have personally found it very cool to watch over the past 5 years. Figured id share and see if i can continue to learn more and see what you all thought.

Interesting. Never heard of this. Will be interesting to see if anyone else has experienced this?

Ill post a pic when everything i happy i just recently sold the left side of the tank so pics will come soon. Happy with the quick responses hopefully someone will have some insight.
 
Sold left side of the tank? So now you have a right side of a tank im a little curious as to how this works, I mean without the left wouldn't the water fall out? LOL :lolspin:
 
I'm curious to know how fast the left side fills after the mass clearing. Does the population slowly migrate over and expand, or do they spread as they split? Pics are needed for this thread for sure.
 
Very interesting, very curious as above. I want to know how the remaining RBTAs fill the void as well!

Pics would be great, even if it's ugly ones. How many Clowns do you have? How do they feel when their host anemones split?
 
I have a 90gal, I started out with 1 RBTA about 4 years ago and have about 15+ now. My tank sounds just like yours as far as anemones taking over the tank. I prob. sell about 20 a year. I have 1 moon lite mounted on one side of the tank that comes on every night. Not sure if that's has something to do with it...

I will normally take all the rock out on one side then remove the GBT off the rocks then replace the rocks after. They seem to just move as more room is made available. The clowns really dont care that they split because if one starts to close in order to split there are others to host in.
 
The tank is viewable on 2 sides and all the rock runs down the middle so there are around 15 in the front and around another 10 or so in the back.
 
Someone should try to reanact this to see if its applicable in all cases.... then I can finally get a carpet for under 75 $$!!
 
Cool tank my nems split with no moon light at all but not as much as that lol..

I think the phenomenon is pretty standard in nature that spawning events following or on full moons.. Lunar cycles have a huge part in nature that's why all these light makers and controllers are trying to mimic it =)..

I for one am just about to add the lunar add on to my reef angel to see If it will give me the same response. I'm going to add 6 total units above the tank that when programmed are supposed to follow the geographic lunar cycle of my choice. Most think it's crap =) .. I'm interested and it's inexpensive so I want to give it a try..
 
Well im glade you guys enjoying this and somewhat amazed as how i have been over the years watching these guys just explode once a month. I am also really surprised that no one has ever has this happen before in there tank.

Unit 15- ya it really is nice i know GBTA arnt anything amazing but i have single handily helped LFS lower prices on these bad boys so because they split so much.

I was also wondering is it could be a mutation or something. I only started with one so there was so spawning or anything. Curious if this GBTA had something in DNA that makes it split more rapidly. I have see some GBT at LFS that get huge like dinner platers. Mine will maybe hit 10-12 inches across then bam it will rip itself into 2 or 3. Just something that i have been mowing over the past years.
 
This happened to me too, but not quite as bad. I just moved 11 rbta's from a 120 gallon to a 150, and the next week I had 19 rbta's. Bleh. They are a serious pain and would advise anyone with anemones to keep the numbers at 5 or below, because after that, they multiply too quickly.
