Anemone Rescue/Pity Purchase

Yesterday I got a call from my LFS's owner saying that someone had left an anemone outside his shop some time that night and he had found it the next morning. He asked that I come by and get it and try to nurse it back to health since he wasn't able to do that. So I went over to pick it up. He says it is a Haddoni but I'm not sure. It looks severely bleached. I acclimated it to my tank and put it in last night. It has moved a bit since and has opened up a lot more than it was at the shop. Any ideas what kind of 'nem it is and what I can do to help it along?

Here are a couple pictures. The last picture is how it looks now.

It looks to be a very sadly treated GBTA. It will need frequent feedings of a few mysis, and excellent water quality+bright lighting to recover. Good luck.

Hi, the foot does look kind of like a haddoni, and yes it is very bleached. What type of lighting do you have? If it is really bright, I would shade the nem with about 3 layers of window screening, And remove 1 every other week. The mouth looks good, so thats a good sign, but you might want to QT if you can and treat with Cipro (see other threads).

Give it a few days to a week in you tank and then start feeding very small pieces of food every few days. I usually feed salmone soaked in selcon to my haddonies.

Hope this helps a little, and keep us posted.

Good luck, also, nice of you to take care of this nem):

Thanks. Is thawed frozen mysis alright? I feed my tank frozen brineshrimp and frozen cyclops once a week and I notice the other 'nems grab brineshrimp.
Really? You think it is a BTA? I was kinda hoping for a carpet 'nem lol. But I've never seen a 'nem in this bad condition so I can't say what it is. As long as it lives I'm happy.

Right now I have a 50/50 Power Compact but I'm supposed to receive my new light in a couple days. My new light has a 150 watt Metal Halide + (4) 24 watt T5s. The 'nem is in a spot where it can crawl under a ledge of rock (half way under right now).

My other 'nems normally get fed silversides and NLS pellets along with whatever food they manage to catch. So I'm guessing feeding it NLS pellets for now wouldn't be the best idea?

Thanks! I managed to bring a Condy 'nem back from a pretty bad situation so that's why the LFS owner called me. This 'nem is much worse though.

Brine shrimp aren't worth much nutritionally, and both cyclops and brine are way too small for this anemone's condition. Silversides are too big and run a risk of making the nem sick. That's why I suggested mysis. With tentacles that short, it may not be able to grab food at all. In that case, you'll have to turn off the flow and let some food set over the mouth. If the nem wants the food it should be able to pull it in as long as it doesn't move.

Mine looked like that when I got it. It takes a really really long time, but it will get better.

This is it taking it out of the box.

This is it after acclimation. Not quite as bad as yours, but pretty bad. He wouldn't take any food. Just had to wait for his tentacles to come back.

This was him after 3-4 months. Looks much better and jsut starting to get his color back.

I wouldn't add a clown yet. The added stress of a clown picking at it to begin hosting may be too much. If it doesn't take food, just provide adequate light, and wait.

good job saving the nem RNich34

I hope the OP has the same success as you. unless I am misunderstanding something, I'm just shocked that people may be paying for these nems. while I know it is to save them, I would think the LFS would just be happy to see it survive :(

Instead of make money? No. I put in for a refund when I bought mine and got it. I told then I didn't think it was going to make it and it did.

Your 'nem looks great Rnich34! Thanks for the pictures. I can't wait till this one gets better. She (aren't all 'nems female?) is actually looking a tad better this evening. No worries on the clown. I have no intentions of getting a clown for at least a couple months. I'm happy with my Coral Beauty and two Damsels.

Silly thing chose the WORST spot to sit in the tank for photography. I'll do my best to get more pictures! I'll keep you updated on her progress.

Did u really pay for this nem?

Not much lol. I think I gave the LFS owner $10 or so for the anemone. I don't remember. Only reason I did get it was because the LFS owner didn't actually buy the anemone himself. It was left outside his store overnight apparently.
It bothers me to do so but I never buy unhealthy stock from a store if the owner purposely bought it. Supporting things just keep the whole process going.

Thanks! I'll run out and buy some mysis today. I probably won't feed for a couple days though. I want to let it settle in for a while. The tentacles have extended a tiny bit more since the last picture but they are still very stubby and vary sparse. There aren't many tentacles at all. I'll do my best to spot feed it.
Yeah, BTA. Needs to attach in the live rock, preferably in a hole in the rock.
Thanks for the confirmation. The 'nem moved on her own across the tank some time today when I was at work. It is now sitting behind a big pile of rock about 6" away from the heater and right under the filter outflow. Spread itself out pretty nicely, I just hope it doesn't move any closer to the heater or else I'll have to move it.

No need to buy any frozen food for aquarium. I just get sea food and cut it small. Salmon, tuna, shrimp whatever I see at the grocery.

She is looking better! Here are some pictures from this morning. Tried spot feeding some mysis yesterday. Other 'nems loved it. This 'nem managed to grab a couple bits that I squired in its direction. I turned off all the filters/powerheads and used an air hose to slowly drop mysis around the mouth. I saw the tentacles holding the shrimp but didn't see her put any in her mouth.

Getting more color and more tentacles! I think she is on the mend. Hasn't moved in a couple days and stays open most of the time.

Thanks guys! It's been two weeks since I got her and she is looking much better. Still isn't able to grab a bit of silverside but she is eating mysis (I think). Here's a picture I took yesterday.
