Anemone sucked up intake

Hello all,

I've been a member for a while but this is my first post. I recently added a green bulb tip anemone to my 40 gallon tank hoping my clowns would take to it. I placed it on a piece of live rock and it had spent the past 3 days moving around it trying to find a spot it liked. Then, I came home from work today and i couldn't find it. I looked in my sump and found nothing, but did notice that my pump seemed to be returning faster than my intake. To my horror, I found the anemone stuck/ dismembered in the gutter guard i had placed on my intake. It seems he let go of the rock and got sucked into the intake faster than it could squeeze through the holes in the gutter guard and got shredded pretty good. So my question is this: Will the pieces regenerate, or is it beyond hope? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here it is before:

If it was healthy before the incident then the main body should be able to regenerate. Good flow is important to keep it from getting infected.

Hosting clowns can be a hinderence as they can be overly aggresive to an anemone that is trying to heal itself.

Good luck, keep us posted.

The physical tank is new but everything in it came from a 20 gallon of mine that had been running for about six months. I took a water sample to my LFS Before purchasing the anemone and they said my nitrates were a little high so I cut down on feeding and rinsed my mysis shrimp in RO water before feeding them to my clowns. When I took another sample in, they tested for nitrates, phosphates, and Ph and all were in check. I have been having issues with diatoms though as you can see in a few of the pics. My LFS said this wasn't anything to worry about so I didn't give it a second thought

Sorry, forgot specs on the tank. It's a 40 gallon acrylic with aquatic life T5 HO lighting (2 39w 420/460 and 2 39w 700+ bulbs). I'm running a single 1" outlet into a filter sock, then through a seaclone skimmer and back up through a quite one pump. I should be running somewhere in the neighborhood of 600-650 GPH. I've only got 20lbs of live rock but the bio load should be minimal as I only have 2 clowns 2 crabs, 7 snails, some zoos and 2 small mushroom corals. I've also been doing weekly 5 gallon water changes using oceanic brand salt mix.

Everything about your setup sounds good to me. I think it has a good chance of pulling through this ordeal. If the clowns get to rough on it you may have to isolate.

So far so good! It seems to be healing well. It's kinda hiding at the very bottom of one of my rocks but some some of it's arms are bulbing up like a healthy one would. Also, a piece that got torn off in the incident seems to be growing larger. It had a piece of the foot on it so we'll see what happens. Neither seem to want any food right now but im gonna keep trying each night. Thanks so much for all your help everyone!

If the mouth was damaged it will not accept food until it heals. It sounds like you might end up with two anemones now.

Just to let you know how tough a healthy BTA can be. Yesterday afternoon I cut up 7 anemones into 18 pieces. This morning they were all inflated and looking good.

Can we get some pictures? Don't link to facebook.. Use photobucket or another image hosting site so everyone can see them.

Wow! That's good to know they can be so resiliant. I'll try and post some pictures when I get home from work this evening!
