Anemones and LEDs

Ron Popeil

Love them clownfish.
How many of you have been running your anemones under LEDs for six months or longer?

What species do you have and which LED fixture are you running?

How well do you think your anemones are doing?

How many of you switched from halides/T5s to LEDs and are glad you did? How many switched back?

Thank you!

I have not had my LEDs for longer than 6 months (going on a month) but I thought I'd respond to your post.

I have a S. gigantea, about 14" across directly under a Radion that's hung about 9" off the surface of the water. The gig is on a rock about 12" below the surface. Other than a nicer change in color -- moving from a brown to mauve with yellow tips, I don't notice any difference from moving to LED from a 250 watt 15k halide (I had two on my 120 gallon tank).

The nem seems to be doing fine. It's definitely growing, but I am feeding it weekly.

I'm glad I switched to Radions since the tank temp has come down a few degrees and I know that I'll never have to swap bulbs. HOWEVER, I definitely miss the shimmer of a halide bulb -- the look of LEDs takes some getting used to.

I've had these bubble tips under the Ecoxotic Panorama fixtures for almost 2 years now.

Switched 1 of each color over from metal halides.

First couple of weeks they didnt do well. Ended up splitting a couple of times but have been fine ever since. There are 8 total now.

I switched from 6 T5 bulb fixture over my 75g to 2 radions. I have a rose BTA and it never even noticed or moved. Still as beautiful as ever and growing. Currently 12" at least when open.

Lighting-DIY 36 three watt Cree LEDs over a 58 gallon.

Anemones- 2 H. malus. One I have had for nine months and the other only two weeks. The h. Malu that I have had for nine months is IMO doing very well.

Mag under a Vertex Illumina 200 series since Oct '11. was previously under 250w halides. Nems color looks richer under the Vertex. Definitely glad I made the switch.

Have a matching tank/light setup with RBTAs.

I've had DIY reefledlights.com cree's on my 210 for 2 years now. No optics on the LED's. Supplimented with (4) 4' T5 ATI aquablue plus. It is double T5 in the center of a 6' tank, if that makes sense. In that time I had a pizza, gig, RBTA, GBTA, crispy, and mertens. All did very well. Only ones left in the tank now are mertens and crispa. Doing very well. All others got pulled for not playing nice, except gig. It died 6-7 months in after an amazing recovery, but did a great job with recovery using LED. I did try MH for a couple months this past winter for heat reasons, but changed back begining of the year to LED. Overall, I like my LED's. But, they are just lights. Only one part of the whole picture. They work just as good as MH, IMO.

I also have the same kind of LED's on a 75. LED only, no suppliment. Has mostly sps with one gig. One thing I can say for sure, LED+SPS=amazing. IMO, with SPS, no contest with any other light I've tried, and that's MH, T5, PC. I love the heat factor/lack of, with LED. Anemone's, I'm not quite sure LED is the best, but mine seem to do just as well compared to the 250 watt MH I've used.

BE CAREFUL, I lost a bunch of corals in the beginning, they are stronger than they appear to our eyes. I may have experienced coral fry from lack of dimmable LED's. They just didn't look as bright as MH to me.

I went with non-dimmable LED's with optics on my nem tank and bleached the crap out of them. I went back to MH's and everything recovered nicely. I think I've learned my lesson and have now slowly starting easing back into LED's. No optics and dimmable. Once again, BE CAREFUL or you could lose 100's of dollars in stock.

thank you everyone for the responses! starting next weekend, i will be firing up two AI Sols over my 60 cube. i am excited to try these out, but apprehensive because i have enjoyed my halides for so many years....

In response to hypoj's experience-

I also got non-dimmable with optics. I started with blue on for the normal photoperiod and white for one hour. I increased the white photoperiod one hour a week until I was back at my normal schedule. Everything adapted well for me. I have several maxi minis, 3 BTAs and a rock anemone, as well as numerous corals and miscellanous nems.

I have been running AI Sol's for about 14 months. 3 Units over a 48" 75g tank. My LTA (Macrodactyla doreensis) responded positively to the change the very first day. It took my SPS's months to settle in. Here is what it looks like:

I switched from two 175W 10k Halides supplemented with VHO's and have been very happy since, as has my anemone.

RP- I felt the same hesitation as you on switching from MH to LED. I was using 250w Radium and switched to AI Sol Blue about 3 months ago. My Mag is looking better than ever and is visibly growing and it's color is richer.

Be careful with your SPS when switching over to LED. I initially started my AI 24" above water level (at 100% on all channels) and lowered by 3-4" per week, until I found the "happy spot" for all my SPS/Clams/Nem at 14" (100% on all) off the waters surface.

Post pics on the before and after...

I been using a radion over my solana since October and my rbta was 6" when I got it. Grew to 12". Then it split into 3+ a booger and the 2 biggest are 10" and 8". Got a little guy at 4". The color has been amazing on the roses and I don't feed them ever. They might get a few scraps floating. But never directly.
I previously had the nem in a 24g nano with a 150 mh for a few years. Growth and color are much more in my solana than under the halide.
Plus my sps are crazy too. Hehe.
Can't go wrong with the LEDs anymore.

elder luis- I chose AI for many reasons:

1. I used to whls them - They have excellent customer service and stand behind their products
2. I have seen 1st hand excellent results with AI in many of the top stores across the West Coast
3. I wanted to get away from the heat and power consumption of my MH
4. Cost savings on MH re-lamping
5. I wanted to be able to tune the spectrum/intensity (even though I run it at 100%)
6. Perfect fit for my cube tank

It was a difficult decision and I almost switched back to my Radium 250w in the 1st week.
