good morning, this is my first post here and I have a ? on anemonies. I bought one the other day for my clowns and laid it at the bottom of the tank with lower current flow. looked good and it filled out great. BUT the next morning he was gone and back behind some of the live rock scaping. as a semi dumb move I went after him and put him in a different area and this morning he is gone again. seems like a waste of $40 if the clowns cant enjoy him or me seeing him. is there a method of keeping an anemonoe where you want them to stay? sorry to be so long winded. thanks in advance for any help.

You should have done your research before you "wasted" $40. You would have learned that anemones will go where they are happiest.

do u know what kind of nem it is? some prefer the sand while others like the rocks....light is a major factor too.

Do you know anything about these creatures, or even what kind you have? These are not delicate creatures. There is special care involved. Your posting in the wrong forum to refer to an anemone as being a "waste."

hello redvipe, i am here asking a question that my lfs gave me an incomplete how to on this anemone. i was told that this one would be great for your clowns. i asked about the water flow as well as lighting and was told to place him on the bottom of the tank in a lower current area. I did and now am playing hide and seek with him. The "waste" is not the anemone but the dislike about not knowing what i did wrong as well as not being able to see the anemone. when asking the lfs again about this they simply said " yeah they'll do that" ( move around). so i fiqured that i would go online to a forum where people know thru experiance and not just to sell. so here i am asking and kinda feeling like a child that did something wrong. i am asking about them in order to learn more. thanks and have a great day.

Some people don't type like they think. I don't think redvipe was trying to be mean. His info is usually right on.

To begin, we would ned to know what kind of anemone you got, a Long tenticled, bubble tip, etc.. long tenticles nems like the sand and won't go to the rocks, while the bubble tips like the rocks and won't go to the sand. See, it makes a difference what type you bought.

As for lights, nems need very intense lights. For example, my Atlantic carpet nem is mounted as high on the rocks as possible and stretches for light. I have 250w metal halides. My bubble tip is about halfway up the rock and goes in and out of a cave to regulate his light absorption. Needs between the two are different.

As for research, you should research before the purchase and try not to chase yourself after the fact. This for future advice. I, as have many, have done the same thing. Buy, then pay the price. We all make mistakes and learn from them.

Long story short; find out what you have, tell us about the equipment you have on the tank and we can help at that point. The more infor the better.

Hope this helps some. Oh, and you can generally only believe half of what your LFS tells you. They are there to sell and make a living without a lot of regards to the livestock in some cases.

Pics, Pics, Pics!!! Asking for help without pictures is just trying to shoot in the dark. Also, need more info. It is recommended not to put an anem in the tank for at least 6 months and to have extensive research beforehand. Read the anemone FAQ's at wetwebmedia. Find some good ID site and figure out what you have. These are the first steps to caring for an anem, but by far not the hardest ones.

I think it is irresponsible for a LFS to sell an anem without knowing the tank it's going in...you lose more customers with one dead sale than holding off and waiting for the right time to sell something. Just like those people with a 20G cube trying to buy a tang...just sad.

Please understand you now have a responsibility to your anemone, your anemone has no responsibility to you. Your LFS will tell you ANYTHING to get your money, as they did in this case. In the future PLEASE do not believe anything they tell you, and research EVERYTHING you buy before you buy. That being said, I will read the rest of the posts and see if I can help.

As stated previously, we need a list of all of your equipment, including lights. All of your parameters, actual numbers, not something like "good" as many people give me. Your temperature, salinity. And we really need a pic to see what we are dealing with. Even if it is a bad pic, we still have a chance at identifying the creature. You got a lot to learn and you must act quickly to save this little guy. Another alternative is to contact someone in your area to see if they can take care of this little guy until you have done your research, and can provide an adequate home for it. If you bought this anemone to host a clownfish, that may never happen.

redvipe& all with info

redvipe& all with info

good morning, just getting a chance to get back with you. redvipe i am sorry if i seemed hasty yesterday. was just a little bummed. i will get a chance tonight to get my parameters and more tank info for your help. as far as a picture of the anemone, i may not be able to get one due to not knowing where he is and not wanting to take the rock scape apart. (is this the right idea, because i have been told not to disturb the enviroment once set up.) this anemone is a long tenicle one and being green in color tenicles. (may help or not). thanks again for all your help each one of you. have a great day.

I manipulate my Rose Bubble Tip Anemones all the time. If I notice them trying a jail break I'll twist the rock their sitting on. Or I'll move a rock in their way to annoy them into position where I want them. Also, if I don't like the way they're "flowing" I'll put a strong current on them to blow them in the other direction. It usually works for me, however, once they did make the break & everyone had to get new living quarters. That's always fun - ha, ha. Good luck.
