Angelfish in Reef Aquariums??

This is a thread for reefer to share there experiences with angelfish that have been or have not been kept successfully in a mixed reef enviornment.

It is also for me to know what angelfish to add to my 90G tank (im probably only going to add one large and one drawf). I soon going to get my hands on a golden drawf angelfish but first i need to no if it is reef safe or not.

P.S add experiences with any angelfish not only my golden angelfish

THZ:D  :D

If u get a golden pygmy you won't have a reef tank anymore, just a tank with lots of dead coral and a golden pygmy angel. Not a wise choice for a reef tank. Best bets r argi angel or african flameback. People have had success with some other pygmies like potters and mutlicolors, but they r very hit or miss.

Even african flameback doesn't always work, mine pestered my acros so all polyps were retracted during the day. Gorgeous fish, but not good for acros (it may not have been hurting them, but I don't like the look of acros with retracted polyps, and they can't be catching any prey with the retracted polyps).

Well i guess ill share my own experience with some of these

Orangepeel Angelfish- I loves to peak away at open brains and LPS that dont tend to have ong tentacles like acans.
Flame Angelfish- Have it in a reef right now and doing great tried everything once and other then that it didnt touch anything

I had a Potters Angel that never tasted any of my corals but I have heard of them completely tearing apart other reefs.
Also I had a lemon peel angel who LOVED star polyps. I didn't mind though as I was happy he kept them in check.

I have a flame and a blue face in my 300 gallon and neither bothers anything. I have mostly lps, softies and mushrooms. The flame has been in there for almost 2 years and the blue face for about 4 months.

I have an emperor angel and an asfur angel in my reef with mostly sps and a few lps, some star polyps and a colony of brown and orange zoa's that are slowly taking over the tank. The emperor has not touched a thing to my knowledge, but the asfur has been seen sampling everything except the SPS. Luckily, he is small enough that he doesn't do much damage and I am just growing him up until he is big enough to go into my fish only without getting eaten by my mappa puffer.

By the way my Emperor was about 1'' when I got him almost 2 years ago and now he is about 5" and almost done changing into his adult colors. I think the secret to success with pomacanthus in reef aquariums is to start them out tiny and feed them multiple times a day to discourage them from grazing, and of course you have to be lucky! Once they are accustomed to prepared foods that are very nutrient rich and take very little work to eat, they don't want to work hard and get stung by corals and anemone's for a much less nutritious and less palatable meal. Its when they are struggling to consume enough nutrients to sustain themselves that they will look for alternatives, and next in line to prepared foods and algea are corals. Even a hungry tang will turn to eating corals in a pinch. Don't give your angel a reason to sample your corals and I would guess a person could have about a 60% sucess rate given any individual. Which isn't bad considering how sweet a large angel in a full blown reef is. Just my 2 cents.

Currently have a blue face, regal, coral beauty and flame...the blue face occasionally pesters my carpet anemone, and ate all my zoanthids...the blue line in my avatar (RIP) had a similar taste in corals to my blue face. Also had a Majestic once upon a time who didn't bother anything. Neither the Regal nor the two dwarf angels bother anything. Note that I don't have anything like open brains or the like, or clams, and of course I used to have zoanthids but no longer :)

Okay here is my 2 cents- probably not worth that. Keep angels in a reef is ALWAYS a risk. Almost all angels will pick a inverts. With the exception of a few hard to come by exclusively herbivorious angels. This being sad most dwarf angels can be kept in a reef with little to no damage, but there are always exceptions. Some angels are more likely than others to pick at corals and clams. Please use caution when adding any angel to a reef, the exception being very large reef tanks where any damage is not like to be noticable. I found lots of excellent information from a reefkeepers article. Check it out.

At one store I worked at I've seen a juvenile emperor and multicolor in a 240 with very little problems.........another store I've seen a blue face pick on almost everything in the tank...........I've wanted an argi in my tank but haven't had the courage to add it yet

WOW lol i wasnt expecting successful experiences from the blueface same goes for the imperator angelfish.

Actually, there are alot of success stories involving pomacanthus in reef aquaria. Especially involving large sps dominated reefs.

I have an emperor and a blue angel in my 150 gallon reef. And it works surprisingly well. The emperor is nipping at one of my favias and the Blue one has a taste for my pavona cactus. But other than that they go along very well with my corals.

Chrysaurus 6 in, regal, emperor, personifer, potters, queen, french, joculator, and african flameback. 99% sps, a few leathers, zoos, mushrooms, and a 12" ritteri. chrysaurus pick on the largest leather ocassionally. sps they do not touch.

I only got 3 words to say lol... I AM SHOCKED!!!!!! Now i can try some of these angels without much fear lol.

OranguTang- Are you serious my lemonpeel loves to pick on my LPS and its driving me insane lol.

Monstrigity- your right alot of people with SPS are having success with angelfish check this out http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-12/totm/index.php

Gasman- I saw your thread before and those are some nice specimens you got in your tank.
