Angelfish Suggestion

Heya RC,

I am slowly stocking my tank, I would like to add 1 non-dwarf angelfish. Size isn't an issue. Also, I will be putting coral in the tank that angels will likely not target. That being said, a species that tends to not pig out on corals would be nice.

I have had issues of severe aggression with dwarf angels in the past, I do not have a lot of knowledge with larger angels. I know they all can be semi-aggressive, but I am looking for some suggestions for better reef inhabitants when it comes to aggression.

It's tank mates of note would be;

Sailfin Tang
Blue Hippo Tang
Yellow One Spot Foxface
Coral Beauty Angel

Angels I really like include;

Emperor Angel
Blueface Angel
Regal Angel

It doesn't necessarily need to be one of these 3, they are just the ones that I'd like to have.

A emperor with a regal isn't advisable.. Regals a very docile and don't adapt well with aggressive tankmates like a emperor

not the most beautiful, but the Lamarck angel is absolutely reef safe. I have one and it doesn't bother any coral. I believe they are plankton eaters so corals are safe. if your tank is large enough, a mated pair would look great.

Oh I won't be putting 2 of them together. I would prefer just 1 of the 3 that I listed if possible.

Ah misunderstood what you wrote. out of the three you named i would pick either of the two before the emperor. Mine is a real SOB and i got it as a 1.5" juvenile 2 yrs ago and now its close to 7" and aggressive and seclusive

Beware with this one, not all are 100% reef safe. Mine has only been in the tank for about a month and I had to pull my acans and clams. Lamarck's seem to be the least safe of the species.

Sorry, I don't have any large angel experience other than above, my tank is too small for them. I really like the Blueface and Majestic, but will most likely not have one. Good luck with your search.

I had a juvenile Majestic that was real good never touched any coral in my tank, SPS,LPS, Zs and Ps, but when I gave to a friend, it flipped a switched and went after his corals. don't know why.

I don't trust mini angels at all anymore.

Just for giggles, If you want a trophy and has room (180G), there is a bandit angel and conspicuous angel for sell right now at DD.
Other than that I vote for Regal- but agree they are very docile and be aware of rough tank mates.

With both of these angels 72-75 is the recommended temperature range for longevity and health of them. The lower the better

Thank's for the advice everyone. I'll steer clear of the emperor. I really like the Blue Face so that might be what I end up getting.

I don't have the $$$ to blow on a fish like those 2 on DD lol, nor will I ever haha.

Just to clarify, Bandit angels can be purchased for 5-600$ frequently especially if we are talking diver direct. Conspics can be purchased for 1500$ for larger specimens and small ones command closer to the DD price

No offense or anything, but the only reason I can see you not telling us your tank size is because you think we would most likely disagree with your stocking plan. If you have the size I would go for the majestic, they are not to aggressive and might not be as difficult to get eating as a regal, if you get a juvenile they grow slowly so if your tank is on the smaller side you could have one for longer.

I think its a 140 gallon based on OPs previous posts. This means that the emperor and blueface angel grow to big, and also the hippo tang and sailfin. Everything else is fine. The regal would be the best angel for your tank but other suggestions are flagfin, gold flake, any genicanthus would also work.

I love my emperor, although as said above he may eventually go after any other angel in your tank. Mine is 7 years old and about 13 inches and not the nicest of fellows, I tried to add a 5 inch goldflake recently and let me tell you that did not go over well.

I still have him with my 9 year old Flame angel but not sure if that is going to work out long term. The flame gets chased when ever they come close together.

To OP if your tank is only 140g then I would avoid the emperor unless you buy a small one and plan to upgrade in the near future. I had a 150g when I first got mine (5 inches at the time) and then I upgraded to my current 325g.
