Any one have info on these guys? Reef safe, predator tank, possible tank mates? Lfs has one and has for a month, it is eating ghost shrimp and frozen both. It is about two inches long, maybe a bit more and a inch or so tall. Would it work with my inimicus didactylus or would it get eaten?
 
There's a whole thread on here called the Frogfish files that will tell you a lot! They are a species only kinda fish....
 
You haven't said what species the angler is, which can be a huge issue. Assuming its an Antennarius sp. t might be a 4" wartskin (A. maculatus) or a 10" Commerson's (A. commersonii), and THAT will make a huge difference in itself.

Having kept four of these fish, I do recommend that they be kept in a species-only setup. Anglers aren't too particular about the size of prey they'll try to swallow (up to 2x their size), and if they swallow too large of a prey item, it will begin to decay in their GI tract before it is digested, killing the angler, so you'll lose two fish.

Also, an adult goblin will likely swallow a 2" angler...there's that "size differentia"l thing again...
 
Deffinitly need there own tank. I tryed to put one in my fish only and it ate my fu man chu that was almost as big as he was. And then it died the next day so it was a bad deal all around :-(
 
I'll get a pic tomorrow or Monday and maybe you guys can help id. How fast do these guys grow? I haven't seen a change in it in the month they have had him.

You need a picture of their lure for a positive ID. How fast they grow depends on the species and how frequently you feed them. Impossible to say anything based on how long your LFS has had him. There's a decent chance they don't feed him regularly (or enough) and equally possible is that it's one of the smaller species so it won't grow much larger.

this is the only way I have ever seen it. I have never seen it swimming or with the fins all spread out. It does move around the tank, it is never in the same spot twice when I go in.

Without seeing the lure I can't be certain with an ID. If I were to take an educated guess I would say it's either a spotfin angler (A. nummifer) or freckled angler (A. coccineus) just because they are two of the more common species that seem to get shipped and remain unidentified (and sold as a common angler).

If it is either of those they'll definitely grow larger than the 2" it is right now. It'd likely max out around 5" in length and be quite thick. I bought mine at around 2-2.5" and he was probably just slightly over 5" when he passed. He grew to that size in 1-1.5 years.
 
+1 on the id above. Most likely A. coccineus, IMO. Are his fins ragged? If so, I would definitely warn against the purchase of this fish. You probably won't see it move around much, as IME, these fish are pretty cryptic and mostly creep around (anglers are in general, but this species, I think, is more so than most). He might swim, especially if he feels threatened, but he probably won't just as a matter of course. :)
 
While I think this guy is cool I will probably pass on him. Thanks for all the help. I don't know where I would set up another species only tank and have time to devote to it that I'm sure it needs. After the id I searched for it and it has never looked like any of the pics out there. I have never seen its feet out and planted like the pics show. I'm not sure how the fins are either.

There's always room for another tank! :lmao: But seriously, although I think they're great fish, they definitely have their own set of needs and are better suited for species only setups. Luckily they're pretty readily available, so when you break down and add that next tank (that we all swear is never going to happen), you can pick one up.
 
Unless this one would work in a ten gallon or with my I. didactylus I really don't have a place. As my sig says 40, 55, 120, and a 400 coming. I also have a 29 QT, 29 fresh for my daughter, 55 cichlid, and a 10 for feeders.
Corals aren't even the big deal, just another tank.

10 should be fine they aren't very active but i would add a large skimmer
 
I agree with Jessica...that angler looks a bit "rough". I'd definitely wait or pass on it.
