Angry about overpriced corals!

Supply and Demand always rules. Demand goes up, price goes up, supply goes down, price goes up.

Demand goes down, price goes down, supply goes up, price goes down. It always works and never fails.

Almost always, and almost never fails. But that's a discussion for a different board.


When see these threads I'm glad that...

1. I have one (soon to be two by all accounts) great local fish shops.
2. I have a decent, active local reef club.
3. I'm more interested in SPS than Chalices.

all that crap that people pay too much money for when they come out. Then the demand buys, and you can buy them for 1/3 the original price.

Or have a daughter (now 23) but at one time ..................well, does the words Beanie Baby's ring a bell with anyone? We have plastic containers full of these things!

buying from wholesalers is a good way to go.. i buy from island direct marine.. good wholesaler.. his aussi corals are more expensive then his other corals, but that is pretty typical industry wide. But then again, aussi corals are very nice corals.

And thinking about it further, I remember when cespitularia first came to the states... they were like 100$ WHOLESALE for the colonys... now, I saw them the other day for 18 bucks! LOL!

Yup, they price it like that and people continue to buy so they have nothing to lose. Personally I will never buy from a store who charges per polyp, especially on items such as zoas. Luckily my LFS charges flat rates and does not take part in the practice of charging per polyp on the less rare stuff.

On World News today, coral speculators believe the new Aussie "Oui Oui Outta Site Walla Walla Yummo" Acans will reach $250 a polyp by late this summer. Speculators relate the sudden spike in price, to a distributor that wants a new Porsche. In other coral news "BamBam" "Armor of Gods" and "Eagle Eye" Zoas have seen a sudden drop in price. Speculators relate this to people just not giving a s#*t about them anymore. Coming up later, "Are your fish happy?" We'll talk to a man that says he can teach you how to find out.

Its not overpriced if someone buys it. I'm with alot of you guys, if i could I'd only trade for frags, but I live in montana and no one has SPS corals. Plus I hear alot about reef club MEN, red bugs, AEN, face huggers, and other nasty stuff so even IF people had stuff to trade i'd be sceptical lol

Thats how business works. Growing corals at home and trading them is alot cheaper but, you are not taking into account overhead. You are not factoring in your electric bill, mortgage or rent, paying your help, salt, supplies, the livestock you buy that doesn,t make it, taxes, insurances, etc, etc. A steak dinner doesn't cost you $16.95 to make at home!

If people buy at rediculous prices... Why should they stop selling? Prices are indeed high but as a business, they will do what ever it takes to make $$$. Trust me, I hate the prices too

I underrstand some elevated mark up to a point. It take a lot of lights, water, pumps ect and your time to keep a dedicated reef shop in good working order. Its not cheap to run and the initial investment must be insane. And like every other business online sales have taken a huge share of the equipment sales even if you have good prices (unless your a major online player as well). I've also seen busy reef shops on a weekend make $100-300 in sales every 5 minutes as I waited my turn to get a sales rep which EASILY equals five figure sales on a weekend so I see your point as well.

Bottom line is we cant go to australia and collect this stuff our selves so as along as enough people are willing to pay for it, it will exist. Good thing about this hobby is things that werent common usually become common sooner or later. Acans that are considered common and not expensive now are the same ones that were selling for $60 a head a few years ago. Same frags that were exclusive at one point are a dime a dozen now. All you really have to do to avoid the initial supply and demand is wait. Even stuff that doesn't become common go out o favor for some new trend. I remember when people wanted pavona but now you cant give it away.
