another 'best' lighting question

Looking for recommendations for SE lamp to be paired with Galaxy 250 watt ballast. Just like everyone else, looking for a good blue with great growth and not break the bank. Mostly SPS with some LPS. I will be using supplementation (still not sure if I will be using T5 or VHO).
Also curious if there are any benefits to using the 240v versus the 120v ballast.

Thanks!

well phoenix 14k's now come in SE......but only problem is they are kinda pricey i think..although i couldnt help myself i got a pair of them.. i think they were 90$ each..ouch....

i read a thread just the other day that aquaconnect 12k's were good alot of people like them because of good par ratings. or the reflux 12k's to i think was brought up.

$90 each?!?! Your crazy. :p lol They are $70 shipped for 250 watters and $55 shipped for 150 watters.

If you have the availability to run 240 I would. Itll save you juice . I ran all my 1000w halides on 220 and saved a bundle from when they were 110.

ran? as in past tense? Cause if you are still running 1000 watters, I wanna see your, um, tank...

How does it save on juice? I slept through my E&M class, so you will need to help me here. 1000 watts is a 1000 watts, right? Wouldn't I still be sucking up 1kw/hour regardless of 120 versus 240?

OK, did a little more reading on the 220 versus 110. Looks like the only impact is on amperage. 2x the voltage = 1/2 the amps. So I can run more on a single circuit if I am running 220. Not much of a reason to go that route at all...

Still looking for the perfect combo. At $90 each, I think radiums are out of my price range.

Where's Davey?!

yeah the single end phoenix 14k's are kind of gouging the price since they are new i guess...for DE bulbs those prices sound about right.. actually price has gone up 100$ for 250w ones now from marine depot

You asked. That's just how I would do it. But I'm only a low voltage tech. :)

Hey Mark!

I use to use Radiums before i had Supplements. Since i got supps now i tried the Aquamaxx 14K from MD and noticed a lot better growth than the Radium( But Radiums are more blue ) I also use the Lumatek ballast which is very similar to the Galaxy. Actually Sunlight supply distributes both. For the price and growth i will definitely continue to use the Aquamaxx. ( For SE bulbs i think it is the bluest 14K i have seen)

Well i got my Aquamaxx for $34.99 when they were on sale. looks like they are $64.99 now.

You can get Radiums at Hamiltontechnology.com for $74.99.

Does anyone use the xm 10k s looks like the par is super high, but I heard that they are on the yellow side . I'm running reeflux 12k s now and was running xm 20k and looking for a better par w/ whiteish blue . My 12k s look ok for sure on the blue side . Numbers just low w/ pfo hqi bals. Can you go to a 10k say xm and sup w/ t5 or pc to get your colors up ? Like a 14k hal or 20k radium.

^^im currently running xm 10k double ended lamps atm yeah par does seem really high (i cant test just a visual thing) but they are really kinda yellow and imo quite ugly but good growth...ha

Im using Phoenix 14K's and I like them alot. Super white/blue. Nice PAR(visual), and Im using PFO HQI Ballast. Im using UV Super Actinic VHO in conjunction.

This thread seems like a good place for my question. My retro kit came with two 400watt 14k MH, and two unknown flouresent bulbs. I plugged the FL's in and they were kinda of flickering. I unplugged one of the bulbs and something is ratteling around inside it, so I think I need at least one new bulb, which I am going to get today.

First, the bulds connection is four pins arranged in a square, like this:

o o
o o

First, what type of bulb is this?

Second, when I powered up my MH's to test them, the color seemed very blue, so I am thinking they are both acctinic if that is posibile. So what new bulb(s) should I get for the FL?

My tank is not yet setup, so I have never seen the lights over water yet.

I "think" the bulbs where Hamilton 14k's. I "think" they may have also said acctinic. For sure both said 14k.
