Another Custom Stand Construction Thread- 120 Gal.

wow, awesome stand! i want to look into finding a carpenter to do something similar but i'm afraid what the costs might be.
do yo umind if i ask how much your costs on this project were? and how many hours of labor? tiy

Right now I have about $350 in materials in the stand. The stain was about $10 and I already have polyurethane. I probably have about 20 hours of labor in the project. Others might be able to build faster but I spend a lot of time measuring and shaving the miter cuts to get a good fit. Good Luck.

Trent, ask and you shall receive.

The stand has more detail but will be stained to match. The raised panel doors will also be constructed like the panels on the bar front.

Beautiful stand. I'm in the process of building a stand for a 240g., would you happen to have the link to sonofgaladriel's stand construction? I just want to do more research before I head off to the hardware store. Thanks again.

I really hate you for being so talented. :eek2: that's one beautiful stand. **can u see that I'm jealous?** :smokin:

Stained it today

Stained it today

First I applied a coating of Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. This it to make the stain take evenly to the soft wood of the molding. They are made of pine. It seems to have helped.

Here is the stand after the conditioner was applied.

Now you can see the detail in the rail cap I installed. It is made of so many pieces because I did not want any end grain showing. There is no exposed endgrain anywhere on the stand.

It is stained using Sherwin Williams oil based cherry stain. Applied with a brush and allowed to soak in for about 10 minutes. Then wiped off with a rag.

Here are some detail shots. On the first, you can see how I routed an ogee edge onto the bottom of the rail cap.

I'm pretty pleased with the way it has turned out so far. I hope to get a coat or two of polyurethane on it tomorrow, since I took the day off.
