Another Lost Mac User

I am trying to get my system to work outside of my network and am completely lost. I am using a macbook pro, an airport extreme, a new apex lite with updated firmware, and a wireless gaming adapter.

I have no problems access my system at the house via a wire from my airport to the apex. I have been trying to follow the networking guides and threads here but I am still lost.

Any help is absolutely appreciated.

It sound like you have two issues:

- You can't reach the Apex when using the gaming adapter.

- you can't get external access to the Apex from the Internet.

Is this right?

What gaming adapter?

What have you tried for configuring the router port forwarding?

Screen shots of Apex network settings and applicable router pages are immensely helpful in cases like this.

I basically have it so I can configure my controller with my laptop, iphone, and ipad, all while the controller is hardwired from my airport extreme. Now, I have no idea where to go from here.

I am pretty computer stupid, to be honest. I still have my apex hardwired to the airport. When do I now plug the apex into the gaming adapter?

My gaming adapter is the Netgear Powerline 100
You should have a pair of them. One connects to the router with a network cable, the other to the Apex with a network cable. There's no configuration required.... it should be plug 'n play. The Powerline adapters MUST be plugged directly into the wall or to a simple power strip - a surge suppressor power strip will prevent them from working.

Please post screen shots of the Internet and Network tabs in AirPort Utility for the Extreme.

You are right about the gaming adapters. I have one plugged into my airport extreme and one plugged into my apex, both by network cables.

No, if I plug run a network cable between the apex and powerline, I lose my ability to access my apex. Am I missing something?

As soon as I run a network cable between the apex and my airport extreme it works fine.

  • If you want to use a different last part of the IP address for the sake of convenience (e.g. to 10.0.1.100), change the last part now.
  • In Airport Utility, configure the TC by going to the Network tab
  • Click the + sign in the Port Settings section.
  • Enter a description like "ApexWeb".
  • Pick a digit number between 1027 and 9999 you can easily remember.
  • Enter that number in both public port fields.
  • Enter the actual IP (10.0.1.39, or if you changed it, that address) of the Apex in the Private IP Address field.
  • Enter 80 in both private port fields.
  • Click Save

The next part is optional, but highly recommended so that Neptune tech support can access your Apex, if needed, using a communications protocol called telnet.

  1. In Airport Utility, configure the TC by going to the Network tab
  2. Enter a description like "ApexTelnet".
  3. Click the + sign in the Port Settings section.
  4. Enter 23 in all 4 port fields.
  5. Enter the actual IP of the Apex in the Private IP Address field.
  6. Click Save

Test by using your smartphone/tablet in cellular data mode, or some other way (like using a neighbor's Internet) which is not on your home network. you will use a URL of http://216.36.5.87:nnnn where nnnn is the 4-digit number you used in the ApexWeb port forwarding rule.

Disregard. I re-read your statement about not using power strips. I now have the wireless gaming adapters connected right to power outlets (not power strips) and they seem to be working within my network. If I go off wifi with my iphone, I don't have control over the apex anymore though.

Ok, it is asking for authorization required when I try and log in from my iphone with wifi off. Is that my apex log in?

EDIT - I used my apex log in info and I can now access it without wifi. Now, how do I get my apex app to work outside the network?

By the way, thanks for your help.

One last question, it seems that my Apex has slowed down a ton now. Can that be expected now that it is wireless? For instance, when I hit lights off, it takes a good 90 seconds for the lights to go out. Is there any way to speed that up some?

No that behavior is not normal or expected.

BTW, Powerline networking is not wireless. It just uses the house electrical wiring in lieu of a network cable.
