Another Lost Mac User

First thing I would suggest is reconnecting the Apex directly to the router again - if the slow response goes away, then the Powerline gizmos are likely having issues.

If you decide to go wireless and If you like the Apple AirPorts, then the AirPort Express is the logical choice. Otherwise, I suggest the Netgear WNCE2001. Best Buy carries them, as do some Walmarts.

Keep in mind that you cannot do an Apex firmware upgrade when using a wireless bridge or gaming adapter.
 
Thanks for the help. I connected the apex directly and I'm back to normal speeds. It looks like I need to order an airport express to get this thing wireless again.

Since I'm not using my houses electrical wiring with the express, do you think I can plug the express into one of my apex power strip outlets?

Yes, you can. I do that with mine. Just don't turn that particular outlet off remotely. :rolleyes:
 
I use an Airport Express with my Apex and an Airport Etreme to connect to the Internet via a cable modem. This setup works very well for me.

I have a Dyn.com account for my dynamic dns provider. Unfortunately, the setup is not simple, but does work well.

When I send a command from my iPhone or iPad it is only a couple os seconds until the Apex receives it.

Great, glad to hear that. I will probably have to ask about the Dyn.com account once I receive my airport express.
 
Are you running the Mountain Lion OS on your computer? If so, you will want to download Airport Utility 5.6 to provide you with all the options needed to setup your DNS. The newest version of AP utility doesn't provided all the options 5.6 has available.

You will need to download the Pacifist app for Mac. Then pull the 5.6 app out and extracted it to your desktop. From there you can move it into your Applications folder. I used the free trail version of Pacifist to Download AP 5.6 to my MacBook and my iMac.

I don't understand how this helps... AirPort Utility 6.x does not include the ability to use a global hostname with TSIG and Wide-Area Bonjour. DynDNS Pro and free accounts do not support those capabilities anyway, so the lack of ability to configure these features in the Airport is of no consequence for the vast majority of people using Dyn.com. Only the higher level Dyn.com Standard DNS and Managed DNS services support that functionality (TSIG & WA Bonjour), and those services cost $$ and require you to have your own domain name.

AFAIK, the ONLY way to make DynDNS Pro or free accounts work when using an AirPort Extreme of TC is to run the updater client on a PC or MAC. If you've figured out a way to use the AirPort itself to update a DynDNS Pro or free hostname (or a no-ip.com account), please share!
 
Russ you are correct in that for the AP Extreme or Time Capsule to work with dyndns.org you need a paid account.

A Dyn Standard DNS is required to use the Apple products to update DNS. My account runs $59 for two years. You also have to bring a registered domain name or of course Dyn will help you with that $30 for two years.

I elected to pay the fees and used a link provided on the Dyn support page to setup my Airpot Extreme (5th Gen).

Airport Utility 6.1 for Mountain Lion looks very much like the apps for iOS6 devices. You lose advanced settings found in Airport Utility 5.6. The problem with 5.6 is that it will not load on a Mountain Lion computer without some help.
 
With respect to the TSIG setup, I recommend against it. In testing, it seems to actually work only infrequently. There's some discussion on the topic in DynDNS's forums, but in short, it seems to be a product defect that Apple doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry to fix.

I tried it a while back with my own DNS server (using the dyn.com instructions as a guide) and never did get it working fully.

Plus, even if it did work reliably, I think most Apex owners won't want to pay the cost or invest the time and hassle.

Better to use the software updater on a computer...
 
Which express are you guys using with Mountain Lion? I am hearing that the 1st gens aren't compatible with the Mountain Lion. Will the 2nd gens work with the Apex?

I have 2 1st gen Airport Express on my system. One for the Apex and the other connected to my Directv.

I have Mountain Lion on a MacBook and an iMac. Airport Utility works from all my computers and the Apps on my iPad and iPhone.

The Airport Expresses are setup to extend my network.
 
Ok, I finally got the airport express (1st gen) in but am having trouble finding it with Mountain Lion. I plugged the Express into an unused outlet of one of my Apex power strips (yes, I did power put power to that outlet). I then ran an internet cable from the Apex directly to the Express. I followed this link to get the 5.6.1 downloaded and then dragged into Applications then finally Utilities.

The Express will connect to the Extreme over wireless; you then connect the Express to the Apex via a network cable. Sounds as if you're that far. I'm a bit unclear on the use of the old Airport Utility here; why are you doing that?

Right, I don't have a cable from the Extreme to the Express, only from the Express to the Apex.

Ok, good, misread that the first time, so you're on the right track. What's the purpose of the old Airport Utility, instead of the current one?
