Another option for red bugs

Has anyone tested this on any LPS to date? If so, what are your conclusions?

I've fragged up a bunch of corals that I intend on dipping. Just letting those frags have a week to heal and I'll report back. For the LPS, I plan on dipping a trumpet coral frag.

This is a concept ive never understood. Can someone please enlighten me. Why are people dipping frags from their own tank? IMHO the goal of dipping is the prevention of bringing in unwanted pests from others tanks.

If you've read this thread closely, it's an alternative to Interceptor for the treatment of red bugs. Meaning that one would already have red bugs and is finding a way to eradicate the pests. That's why you would be dipping your own coral. By using this as a dip, I hope to find that it is not only an effective dip to prevent infestation but a dip that could, over time, rid one's corals of red bugs.

I'm also dipping corals to kill any pests before transferring them over to my other tank/system so that system will be pest free. There have been many members that have asked about the effects that this dip might have on other types of coral (zoas, LPS). In a way, I'm using some frags as guinea pigs to measure the effects of the treatment on them.

Answer your question?

So first post on this forum but oh well. I went to home depot looking for the bayer insect killer and all the have instock is bayer home pest with germ killer. I was wondering if the two were comparable. Seems they have another product bayer home pest/outdoor insect killer.

i got mine at menards. id not get anything with germ killer in it. kinda like antibacterial stuff in silicone you dont want. (no scientific proof, just stating more new poison for the tank might not be good.)

Yea, I didn't want to buy it because I wasn't sure if the active ingredient was the same, ill be waiting for an answer from the pioneer of this method, whisperer lol

Budddman, I think you have the right kind. It is the Bayer home defense with germ killer. The active ingredients are O-phenylphenate and B-cyfluthrin.

I have done my test with this and have so far had great success and no losses other than red bugs. Here is how I did it. I had three of those half gallon sized clear tubs that you get your two part in from brs. Filled each half way with tank water used a small fountain pump (mini power head) in them. The first container I put one spray of Ortho home defence and ran pump. Put infected coral (tri color acro 4X2 inches in size) and let sit in container for 5 minutes. Them put coral and pump into second container as a first rinse if you will for 5 minutes (no ortho in this one). Then coral and pump into third as a second rinse for 15 minutes just as a precaution to see if any bugs will fall off.
This first container had tons of red bugs and pods that fell off the coral. second (rinse) had a few and third had none. The coral slimed a little not much and did turn a litlle brown. It has been 7 days since and color is almost back to before the did and polyp ext is better than ever. So far success! No red bugs on coral! Sorry for the long post just wanted share exp and methods used to others. Thanks.

Very good to hear, my tri-color seems to attract pests more than others as well. They really love the most expensive and nicest corals in the tank. So far they are gone....we'll see if they continue to stay away. Keep us posted.

I saw this thread for a long time but didn't take a look. Too late for me, I already clue all of my SPS with epoxy last night. I have red bugs and AEFW (I think so). I decide to buy some SPS frags at MAX show this weekend I treat my tank with interceptor next week.
I'll go to HD tomorrow to find Bayer Advanced and pull out my garf bonsai which has tons of RB to test (this is the only frag in my tank that has the most RB and is damaged by them. The rest only have few and still color nicely)
I'll take some pics too.
Thanks guys, who were the first people treat their own frags.

I'm preparing to treat my tank using Interceptor, since I have RBs and am not able to remove all the Acros for dipping. In the threads about using Interceptor, there's been reported cases of AEFW outbreaks soon after eradication of RBs. Some believe RBs are keeping AEFWs in control, while others (like me) believe it's some other tank inhabitant that's wiped out during treatment (I'm in this camp).

Has anyone using the Bayer dipping method, which requires dipping outside the DT experienced an AEFW outbreak after the RBs were gone?

Also interested in anyone's experiences and treatment dosages/durations using other products with Imidacloprid, like Bayer Advanced Fruit, Citrus and Vegetable Insect Control suggested by chuckreef or Advantage.

I don't have AEFW that I've seen yet. This is exactly why I don't like the Interceptor whole tank treatment. It kills beneficial pods, etc. and possibly causes adverse long term effects. When I recieve new frags, I dip them and then check the other colonies periodically. After treating the first few affected, they have not returned or moved to others.

Very interesting info. Bug killer for red bugs and AEFW. I had red bugs back in jan of 09, tank was about 1 year old. I also had a hard time getting a vet to give me interceptor. I called the Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital and talked to Dr Wright. He had no idea what I was talking about, sps and red bugs. After being a little more scientific with him explain it was an Acropora coral with a polyp eating parasite he was very interested. Had me bring a frag off an affected coral. He check it out under a microscope and saw the red bugs eating the polyps, even let me take a look. He has a friend that does research at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. After a quick call to his friend, Dr Wright came out and gave me a solution. He gave me Ivermectin which is a liquid injection worm killer for dogs. Wrote up a prescribed dose and sent the frag to MBA for research on red bugs, cool. This stuff worked very well. I have never seen another red bug since.

Of the three current treatments - Interceptor (in tank), Bayer Advanced (outside tank) and Ivermectin (outside tank?) - this treatment is the one I know the least about. Can you provide some details or links on your treatment - duration of treament, dosage, time corals out of tank, product (sounds like you got a different product than the Heartguard product)?

I assume this is an out of tank treatment. I would prefer out of tank vs in-tank (still trying to figure out how to remove a couple well encrusted frags) - afraid "nuking the entire tank of all pods" will have it's own drawbacks.

For out of tank treatments, how do you deal with stray RBs within display system, that might re-infect corals once they're re-introduced?

Here is my turn.
I bought a 40oz of this stuff at HD for $12.99 and TAX.
The frags I decide to treat are my Garf Bonsai which is brown by those RB although it is still growing nicely and one more unknown SPS frag that I saw some bite mark and some AEFW eggs.

I mix 0.5ml Bayer Advance with 2 cups of tank water and dip them for 5-6'. Next time I'll try to mix 0.75ml with 2 cups of tank water.
Here is 2 frags in my white bowl

This is what I see after 5-6'

Because of my bad camera, I have to fix those pics with PTS to let you see these evils easier.
What I see are:
RB: Yes
Flatworm: Yes Flatworm: No, I have to use blazer to remove them.
Pod: Yes
Worm: Yes but they are still on the frag, not sure they will die or not.
Coral stress: No

Anyway, what I can say is this solution is amazing. I'll dip my coral with this my SPS I buy this MAX show.
This is how my corals look like after 4h
