I am going to built my own sump. I have 46 gallon. What size should my sump be? I have a 5 gallon tank just laying around. Would that work? Thanks

It depends on what you are going to put in it. I would go for as big as you can fit under your tank. You need to have room for your return pump, your skimmer if you are going in sump and a refugium if you are building one. Plus it needs to be big enough to hold the overflow from the tank without running over. Could you fit a 10g or 29 g in there?

I am afraid a 5 gal might not hold enough overflow incase of a power outage.

The space I have is 24" deep x 40" wide x 18" tall I don't want to go to big and not have any storage space.
